Meningitis Outbreak in Canterbury, Kent

On March 18, 2026, health officials confirmed a meningitis outbreak in Canterbury, Kent, linked to a recent event at Club Chemistry. This outbreak has resulted in two student deaths and 11 hospitalizations, raising alarm among local health authorities and the community.

The strain identified in this outbreak is meningitis B, also known as MenB, caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis. Symptoms of meningitis include high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, and rash. If not treated promptly, meningitis can lead to life-threatening sepsis.

The UK has a routine vaccination program targeting meningitis groups B and ACWY, with the MenB vaccine introduced to the childhood immunization schedule in 2015. However, outbreaks are particularly common at universities due to social mixing, making this situation especially concerning.

As of the latest reports, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed four cases of group B meningococcal disease, with an additional 11 cases currently under investigation. In response to the outbreak, a targeted MenB vaccination program for university students in Kent has been initiated.

Mr. Speaker, a representative from the UKHSA, stated, “The strain associated with this outbreak is meningitis B, known as MenB. It is uncommon, and as we have seen, a serious and potentially lethal strain of meningococcal disease.” This highlights the urgency of the situation.

Health officials have reached out to approximately 30,000 students, advising anyone who attended Club Chemistry on March 5th, 6th, or 7th, or who was in close contact with a confirmed or suspected case, to seek treatment and receive antibiotics. Mr. Speaker emphasized, “Early medical intervention is crucial to reduce the risks of long-term illness including nerve damage or even death.”

So far, 700 doses of antibiotics have been administered to those at risk, demonstrating the effectiveness of a single course of antibiotics in preventing the contraction and spread of meningitis in 90% of cases.
