Supplementary voter list 2026
Before the recent developments, the expectation surrounding the supplementary voter list for 2026 in West Bengal was marked by uncertainty and a backlog of pending voter records. The earlier draft roll had included 7,08,16,630 names, but many of these were under scrutiny due to various discrepancies.
However, a decisive moment occurred with the publication of the first supplementary voter list by the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). As of now, 27 lakh pending voter records have been settled, with approximately 2 lakh names being processed daily. This rapid processing marks a significant shift in the electoral landscape.
In addition, 29 lakh adjudications have been completed out of the 60 lakh cases that were placed under judicial review. This indicates a concerted effort to streamline the voter registration process and address the backlog that had previously hindered electoral preparations.
The total number of voters in the state, according to the final electoral roll published on February 28, now stands at 7,04,59,284. This figure reflects a reduction from the earlier draft roll, highlighting the impact of the ongoing adjustments.
The removal of 73 Returning Officers (ROs) by the Election Commission underscores the seriousness of the situation and the commitment to ensuring a fair electoral process. Furthermore, the SIR exercise in Bengal, announced on October 27 last year, has been pivotal in facilitating these changes.
Manoj Kumar Agarwal, a key official, noted, “Voters whose names are excluded from the supplementary list will be able to appeal through these tribunals.” This provision aims to ensure that all eligible voters have a chance to participate in the electoral process.
As the supplementary list is set to be released around 9.30 pm on Monday, the hard copy will be made available at the offices of the district electoral officers (DEOs). This accessibility is crucial for voters to verify their registration status.
Centralized processing of the list is currently ongoing in the office of the apex poll body in Delhi, indicating a systematic approach to managing the electoral rolls. The model code of conduct is strictly enforced across all assembly constituencies, ensuring that the electoral process remains transparent and fair.
While the changes are significant, details remain unconfirmed regarding the full implications of these adjustments on the upcoming elections. The electoral landscape in West Bengal is evolving, with the supplementary voter list 2026 serving as a critical component in shaping voter participation.
