David Payne Joins Sunrisers Hyderabad for IPL 2026
In a significant development for the upcoming IPL 2026 season, David Payne has been signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as a replacement for Jack Edwards, who has been ruled out due to injury. The announcement was made on March 28, coinciding with the tournament’s opening day.
Payne, a left-arm pacer, is recognized as Gloucestershire’s highest white-ball wicket-taker, boasting an impressive tally of 323 wickets. His performance in the 2025/26 Big Bash League final, where he took three wickets and was named player of the match, has further solidified his reputation as a formidable player in T20 cricket.
As he joins SRH for a fee of Rs 1.5 crore, Payne brings with him a wealth of experience, having played 233 T20 matches and taken 304 wickets at an average of 21.16. His economy rate in T20 cricket stands at 8.03, highlighting his effectiveness as a bowler.
Jack Edwards, who was initially signed by SRH for Rs 3 crore, was unable to participate due to an injury, prompting the team to seek a replacement. This change comes as SRH prepares to face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their opening match of the season.
The IPL 2026 season is set to run from March 28 to May 31, with SRH looking to make a strong start against RCB. Historically, the two teams have faced each other 28 times, adding an extra layer of anticipation to this matchup.
David Payne’s journey in professional cricket began in 2010, when he first made a name for himself with a notable performance in a 40-over game against Essex. Since then, he has continued to develop his skills across various global T20 leagues, including the ILT20 and BBL.
In addition to his T20 achievements, Payne has also made an appearance for the England ODI team, taking one wicket for 38 runs against the Netherlands in June 2022. His versatility and experience in different formats of the game will be valuable assets for SRH as they navigate the challenges of the IPL.
As the season kicks off, reactions from fans and analysts alike are expected to focus on Payne’s potential impact on the team’s performance. His recent form and experience in high-pressure situations will be closely monitored as SRH aims for success in the tournament.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further adjustments to the SRH lineup as the season progresses, but the addition of Payne is seen as a strategic move to bolster their bowling attack.
