The rise of artificial intelligence is influencing leadership decisions at major companies. Doug McMillon, who has served as CEO of Walmart since 2014, has announced that he will step down from his position on February 1, 2026. This decision comes as he acknowledges the significant transformations that AI is expected to bring to the retail sector.

In his statement, McMillon expressed that while he could initiate the next set of transformations driven by AI, he felt he would not be able to see them through to completion. “With what’s happening with AI, I could start this next big set of transformations with AI, but I couldn’t finish,” he remarked.

McMillon’s resignation aligns with a broader trend in corporate leadership, as James Quincey, the CEO of Coca-Cola since 2017, also announced his departure. Quincey will be succeeded by Henrique Braun, who is expected to lead the company through the upcoming shifts brought on by AI.

Quincey noted that there is a “huge new shift coming along” due to the advancements in AI technology. He emphasized the need for new leadership to navigate this transformation, stating, “My job is also to think who’s the best team to put on the field to get the next wave done.”

Both leaders have recognized the implications of AI in their respective industries. McMillon has begun to understand the concept of ‘agentic commerce’ and AI-led shopping, which he believes will be pivotal for Walmart’s future.

Quincey, on the other hand, concluded that it was time to pass the baton to someone with the energy required to pursue the next phase of growth for Coca-Cola. He stated, “Now was the right time [to step down].”

As these transitions unfold, industry observers are keenly watching how both Walmart and Coca-Cola will adapt to the rapidly changing landscape influenced by artificial intelligence. The leadership changes signal a pivotal moment for both companies as they prepare for the future.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific strategies that will be implemented by McMillon’s successor at Walmart and Braun at Coca-Cola, but the emphasis on AI-driven transformations is expected to be a central theme in their leadership approaches.
