Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, a prominent actor in the Bengali film and television industry, died tragically while shooting for a series called ‘Bhole Baba Paar Karega’ off Talsari beach in Digha, Odisha. The incident occurred on the evening of the shoot, during which he was reportedly in knee-deep water.
Banerjee, 43, was declared dead at a local hospital after being rescued from the sea. Crew members had attempted to save him after he was reported to be drowning. He was brought to the hospital at approximately 6:10 PM.
The police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating whether safety protocols were adhered to during the shoot. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact circumstances of his drowning, and the cause of death is pending the post-mortem report, which will take place at Contai Sub-divisional Hospital.
Prior to this tragic event, Banerjee had insisted on an unscripted drone shot, which was part of the filming process. His sudden passing has shocked many in the industry and beyond.
Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, expressed her condolences, stating, “This news has left me stunned, heartbroken, and grief-stricken.” She further remarked, “He was one of my favourite actors and a wonderful person.”
Sudipta Chakraborty, a fellow actor, remembered him fondly, saying, “Rahul had a heart of gold. He stood up for me and voiced his opinion against internet hooliganism.”
Banerjee is survived by his wife and his 13-year-old son, who are now facing an unimaginable loss.
The incident has raised concerns about safety measures in the film industry, especially during outdoor shoots, as the investigation continues.
Rahul Arunoday Banerjee made his film debut in 2009 with ‘Chirodini Tumi Je Amar’ and had since become a beloved figure in Bengali cinema, OTT platforms, and television.
