JioHotstar Set to Release Major Films and Series
The numbers
JioHotstar is set to make waves in the OTT market with the release of Dhurandhar 2, which has secured a remarkable ₹150 crores for its OTT rights. This figure marks one of the largest digital deals in recent years, highlighting the growing competition in the streaming space.
Dhurandhar 2 is a sequel to the successful Dhurandhar 1, which premiered on Netflix India on January 30. The first installment’s digital rights were sold for ₹85 crores, and it debuted on the platform eight weeks after its theatrical release. The sequel is anticipated to hit theaters on March 19, 2026, with its OTT release expected in late May or early July 2026.
In addition to Dhurandhar 2, JioHotstar is also preparing to launch several other films and web series this week, contributing to a vibrant OTT landscape. Among these releases are Hey Balwanth, a Telugu comedy drama directed by Gopi Atchara, and Vadam, a rural action drama directed by Kendhiran V.
Furthermore, Mrithyunjay, a crime thriller directed by Sri Hussain Sha Kiran, and Thaai Kizhavi, a Tamil film directed by Sivakumar Murugesan, are also set to premiere. These diverse offerings reflect JioHotstar’s strategy to cater to a wide range of audiences.
Industry insiders note that Netflix had previously expressed interest in acquiring both installments of the Dhurandhar series for a combined sum of ₹175 crores prior to the release of the first part. However, Jio Studios’ successful negotiation for the second installment’s rights has shifted the dynamics of the market.
Ram Gopal Varma, a prominent filmmaker, commented on the evolving landscape, stating, “Now that @AdityaDharFilms has EXPLODED an ATOMIC BOMB right under the film industry, what is shocking is the loud silence from the rest of the film industry.” This remark underscores the significant impact that these deals are having on the broader film ecosystem.
As JioHotstar prepares for its upcoming releases, the OTT market is poised for a transformation, with nine new films and web series launching this week alone. Observers are keenly watching how these developments will influence viewer preferences and the competitive landscape.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact release dates for some of the upcoming titles, but the anticipation surrounding JioHotstar’s offerings continues to build.
