Shakti Mohan: A Journey of Independence and Resilience
Shakti Mohan, a celebrated choreographer and dancer, has made headlines not only for her artistic achievements but also for her bold choices in life. At 40, she has chosen to remain single and has moved out of her parents’ home, a decision that underscores her pursuit of independence in a society where such choices are often scrutinized.
Mohan’s journey has not been without challenges. Growing up, she faced eve-teasing and molestation, experiences that have shaped her perspective on relationships and personal freedom. “Yes. Not just once—multiple times, in different places. And not just strangers—even relatives,” she shared, highlighting the pervasive nature of such issues.
In 2010, Mohan gained fame by winning the popular dance competition, Dance India Dance, which propelled her career forward. Since then, she has established her own dance academy, Nritya Shakti, and has contributed to notable films such as Padmaavat and Shamshera.
Despite her professional success, Mohan’s personal life has been tumultuous. She has openly discussed being cheated on in a past relationship, stating, “I was cheated on in a relationship. I immediately broke up.” This experience has influenced her current stance on relationships, as she expresses a desire to avoid men who do not meet her standards. “If boys are like this, I don’t want boys in my life,” she remarked.
Mohan’s decision to remain child-free and single has sparked conversations about women’s autonomy. “It’s seen like a bad thing agar apki shaadi nahi hui or ap ghar se nikal rahe ho,” she noted, addressing societal pressures surrounding marriage and family.
Her mother had previously encouraged her to accept her ex-boyfriend’s behavior, but Mohan chose to assert her need for independence, explaining to her parents that she needed to explore freedom on her own. This assertion of self-identity is a significant aspect of her narrative.
As a great aunt to her nephew, Mohan embraces her role in the family while maintaining her personal choices. Her life story resonates with many women seeking to carve their own paths in a world that often imposes traditional expectations.
Shakti Mohan’s experiences reflect a broader trend of women seeking independence and challenging societal norms. As she continues to thrive in her career and personal life, her journey serves as an inspiration for many.
