Jabalpur cruise accident
A mother tragically clutched her child tightly in a life jacket even in death during the Jabalpur cruise tragedy on April 30, 2026. The incident occurred at Bargi Dam in Madhya Pradesh, India. A cruise boat capsized while carrying 29 passengers and two crew members.
Witnesses reported that sudden strong winds struck the area despite a prior weather alert from the India Meteorological Department. Survivors indicated that the crew ignored requests for safety measures during adverse weather conditions.
Eyewitnesses had warned the operator to return to shore, but their pleas went unheeded. The boat capsized, leaving four confirmed dead and twelve others still missing.
Key facts:
- A total of 15 passengers were rescued and transported to nearby hospitals.
- The bodies of a mother and her four-year-old son were recovered from the water.
- State minister Rakesh Singh announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of victims.
Pradeep Kumar, a survivor, expressed frustration over the lack of safety arrangements. “There was no arrangement. Not all of us were given life jackets and had no option but to share them among ourselves,” he stated. He further criticized the crew’s negligence, saying, “They didn’t come down. They should have taken care of the tourists.”
The tragedy raises serious concerns about cruise safety on the Narmada River and the oversight by Madhya Pradesh Tourism authorities. The cruise was reportedly allowed to operate despite warnings about strong winds.
