Air pollution: Shahid Smriti Van Reduces in Surat

Shahid Smriti Van is recognized as a significant urban ecological restoration project that effectively reduces air pollution in Surat. The initiative has transformed a former green waste dumping site into a thriving green space, benefiting the local community.

The project covers an area of 19,000 square feet and was planted in December 2019. It employs the Miyawaki method, which focuses on creating dense forests in urban areas. This method enhances biodiversity and improves air quality.

Viral Desai, a key figure in the project, stated, “It is truly serving as the ‘green lungs’ for the industrial belt of Surat.” The initiative addresses rising concerns over respiratory problems linked to air pollution. Studies show that higher levels of nitrogen dioxide increase asthma prevalence among children.

The rise in harmful particulate matter continues to pose health risks. Dr. Mamun emphasized that controlling air pollution is extremely important to address respiratory problems. As cities grow, initiatives like Shahid Smriti Van are critical for public health and environmental sustainability.
