Winter storm warning

A rare May blizzard is threatening major highway closures and travel chaos in the Sierra Nevada. A winter storm warning has been issued due to a powerful late-season storm expected to impact the region.

Snowfall totals in the Sierra Nevada are projected to reach 1 to 2 feet at elevations above 6,000 feet. The highest peaks may see up to 4 feet of snow. Wind gusts could range from 50 to 70 mph, with some areas experiencing gusts up to 80 mph.

Interstate 80 over Donner Pass is considered highly vulnerable to road closures because of the severe conditions. Travel advisories have been issued, urging residents and travelers to postpone non-essential travel until at least Tuesday.

A winter storm watch is also in effect for specific mountain regions of Wyoming. Heavy snow is anticipated, with totals ranging from 4 to 10 inches in lower elevations and up to 16 inches above 9,000 feet.

The storm is expected to move eastward into Nevada, Colorado, and New Mexico after impacting California. The National Weather Service defines a winter storm watch as indicating a 50% chance of a hazardous winter weather event occurring.

Officials recommend that those who must travel during this winter weather check emergency supplies for their vehicles. This includes items such as blankets, food, water, and first aid kits.
