Mbappe v Haaland: Who is more important for their country?

Anticipation builds for Group I decider

Boston Stadium is set to host a significant World Cup encounter on Friday, as France, featuring Kylian Mbappe, takes on Norway, with Erling Haaland leading their attack. Both nations have secured qualification for the knockout stages after winning their initial two group-stage matches. The upcoming game will determine the top spot in Group I, potentially influencing their path in the tournament bracket.

Both Mbappe and Haaland have delivered strong performances, each scoring four goals across their first two appearances. This places them just behind Lionel Messi, who currently leads the Golden Boot race with five goals. The match is anticipated to be a captivating contest, with both star strikers expected to start.

Impact on national teams

The importance of both Mbappe and Haaland to their respective national teams is particularly pronounced on the international stage. Since August 2022, France has won 69.8% of its matches when Mbappe is in the squad, a figure that drops to 50% without him. During this period, Les Bleus have also averaged 2.3 goals per game with Mbappe, compared to 1.9 goals without him. Mbappe has been involved in 44% of France’s goals since August 2022, contributing 33 goals and 17 assists.

For Norway, Haaland’s influence is even more critical due to the team’s comparatively limited depth. Since August 2022, Norway has won 64.5% of matches with Haaland, but only 33.3% without him. Haaland has contributed to 43.9% of Norway’s goal involvements during the same period, with 39 goals and four assists.

Haaland is participating in his first World Cup and has made a significant impact, becoming the sixth player in the tournament’s history to score multiple goals in each of his first two appearances. He is only the second player in the last 50 years to achieve this, following Harry Kane in 2018. His recent form includes scoring in 12 consecutive competitive international matches.

Mbappe, France’s all-time leading goalscorer, has scored 16 goals in 16 World Cup appearances. He is 12 years younger than Messi, who is currently ahead of him in the World Cup scoring charts.

Comparing playing styles and contributions

The playing styles of Mbappe and Haaland show distinct differences. Mbappe generally outperforms Haaland in attacking metrics for their clubs this season, including shots, touches, and chances created, though Haaland recorded more assists in the 2025-26 season. Mbappe has also attempted significantly more dribbles in the current World Cup, with 14 in the first two matches compared to Haaland’s one.

Haaland, however, has demonstrated a higher chance conversion rate in league matches over the past four club seasons, converting 23.43% of his shots compared to Mbappe’s 18.24%. While Mbappe narrowed this gap this season, he remained slightly behind. Additionally, Mbappe’s defensive contribution has been noted as lower, ranking 1,481st out of 1,483 players in combined defensive contributions in the top five leagues for players with a minimum of 900 minutes played this season.

The match at Foxborough, outside Boston, will kick off at 3pm local time. France holds a slight advantage with a superior goal difference, meaning a draw would secure them first place in Group I. Norway has also shown strong form, routing Iraq 4-1 and beating Senegal 3-2. France’s preparations for the game have been affected by the temporary departure of manager Didier Deschamps due to a family bereavement, with assistant coach Guy Stephan taking charge.

Haaland expressed his pride in being Norwegian and acknowledged France’s strength, stating that he believes they will likely win the match and the tournament. Finishing second in the group would present a potentially more challenging path for France, including a possible last-32 clash with Ivory Coast and a potential meeting with Brazil in the last 16.
