Ecuador’s Dramatic Comeback

Ecuador delivered a significant upset by defeating Germany 2-1 in their final Group E match, securing a spot in the knockout stage of the World Cup. The South American team, needing a victory to advance, overcame an early deficit to achieve a remarkable comeback.

The match, held at the sold-out New York/New Jersey stadium, saw Germany take an early lead in the second minute. Leroy Sané opened the scoring with a left-footed finish after a quick throw-in and a pass from Florian Wirtz. This marked Sané’s first goal in a major international tournament in his fifteenth appearance.

Despite the early setback, Ecuador responded swiftly. Nilson Angulo curled the ball into the net from the edge of the box in the ninth minute, marking Ecuador’s first goal of the tournament after 39 previous attempts. This goal ignited celebrations among their supporters.

The second half brought further drama, including a penalty decision for Germany that was later overturned by VAR due to a foul in the build-up. Clear chances were limited for a period until Gonzalo Plata scored the winning goal in the 78th minute. Plata reacted quickly to a flicked-on corner from substitute Kevin Rodriguez, sending the stadium into an uproar and completing Ecuador’s stirring comeback.

Gonzalo Plata expressed the team’s determination, stating, "It was incredible. We had a lot of faith and want our fans to know that there are 26 players here that will give their all for everyone in our country." He also acknowledged the support from fans, saying, "People packed the stadiums wherever we played and made us feel right at home. They deserve this far more than we do."

Germany’s Defensive Vulnerabilities Exposed

For Germany, who had already secured qualification as group winners, the loss snapped a previous 11-game winning streak. Despite the defeat, they finished at the top of Group E with six points, ahead of Ivory Coast on goal difference. Ecuador qualified as one of the best eight third-placed teams.

The match highlighted Germany’s defensive vulnerabilities, as they conceded in all three of their group matches. Captain Joshua Kimmich commented on the team’s performance, stating, "We keep inviting the opposition in with turnovers, making them look good in the process." He added, "Fortunately, no real harm has been done yet. But it’s clear we can’t afford another defeat. We can’t keep conceding one or two goals every game."

Manager Julian Nagelsmann had opted for a lineup with minimal changes, aiming to build team chemistry, but the performance was described as disconnected despite the early goal. Jonathan Tah was noted as Germany’s best defender, despite a mistake in the second half that contributed to Ecuador’s winning goal. Angelo Stiller, who came on at halftime, helped to stabilize the midfield.

Leroy Sané, despite scoring Germany’s only goal, has faced criticism during the tournament, with observations suggesting a lack of confidence in his play. The team’s overall performance left many feeling that a lot was still missing, with no player truly standing out.

The match also featured controversial moments, including Ecuador’s protest regarding a potential foul in the build-up to Germany’s first goal, which referee Tori Penso allowed to stand. The overturned penalty decision in the second half further added to the match’s contentious nature.

Ecuador’s journey to the knockout stage followed a challenging start to the tournament, including a defeat by Ivory Coast and a draw with Curacao. Plata reflected on their learning, stating, "We’ve learnt that you have to give it your all right up to the last minute, even if the goal doesn’t come early on." The match concluded on June 25, 2026.
