Harry Kane has become England’s all-time leading scorer in the World Cup, surpassing Gary Lineker’s previous record. This achievement came during England’s 2-0 victory over Panama, which secured their top spot in Group L. The match saw goals from both Jude Bellingham and Kane.
Kane’s record-breaking goal was his eleventh in World Cup competitions. He scored by heading in a cross from Jude Bellingham in the second half of Saturday’s match. This goal pushed him past Lineker’s total of ten World Cup goals.
The England captain expressed his pride in reaching this milestone. He noted that the World Cup is the most significant competition for professional footballers and that achieving eleven goals is a source of great satisfaction. He also mentioned his desire to enjoy the moment with his team and their position at the top of the table.
Lineker, who scored six goals in the 1986 World Cup and four in the 1990 tournament, had previously referred to Kane as a remarkable English striker. Kane’s recent performance includes two goals in England’s 4-2 win against Croatia, making him a player who has scored in three different World Cups: Russia 2018, Qatar 2022, and North America 2026. This places him alongside David Beckham, who scored in the 1998, 2002, and 2006 World Cups.
Kane was the Golden Boot winner in Russia, where he scored six goals, and added two more in Qatar. With three goals so far in the current World Cup, he has helped England advance to the last 32.
Match Details Against Panama
The match against Panama took place on Saturday, with England securing a 2-0 victory to win Group L. Jude Bellingham opened the scoring midway through the second half, providing a sense of relief for England fans after a slow start that followed a goalless draw against Ghana.
Just five minutes after his goal, Bellingham assisted Kane’s historic goal. He delivered a cross that Kane headed in, solidifying England’s lead and securing the record for his captain. The victory ensures England will face a third-placed team in the Round of 32.
The game, played in New Jersey, saw England control possession but struggle to break down Panama’s defence for over an hour. Thomas Tuchel’s side eventually found their rhythm, with Bellingham’s persistence leading to the first goal. He poked the ball home from a corner amidst a crowded box at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
The two-goal burst changed the atmosphere, with supporters finding their voice after a period of tension. Tuchel’s tactical changes, which included resting Declan Rice and giving opportunities to Morgan Rogers, Nico O’Reilly, and Jarell Quansah, did not immediately improve the attacking rhythm in the first hour. However, the individual quality of players like Bellingham and Kane ultimately made the difference.
England finished the group stage unbeaten with seven points, one point ahead of Croatia. This performance ensures a potentially more favourable path into the knockout rounds. Ghana also progressed as one of the best third-placed teams, despite their defeat, finishing with four points, while Panama exited the tournament without earning any points.

Kane’s World Cup Standing
While Kane now holds the record for England’s leading World Cup scorer, he still has ground to cover to match the overall tournament records set by other international players. For instance, Lionel Messi of Argentina has achieved a new record for the tournament’s all-time leading scorer. Messi’s goals in the current World Cup have contributed to his overall total, surpassing a previous record.
Kane is younger than Messi, and both players are looking to increase their goal tallies in the ongoing World Cup. Kane has more World Cup goals than Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who has ten. However, he is four goals behind Brazil’s Ronaldo, who has fifteen.
Another legend within Kane’s sights is Brazil’s Pele, who is one goal ahead with twelve World Cup goals. Pele is the only player to have won the World Cup three times and scored in four tournaments: 1958, 1962, 1966, and 1970. His twelve goals were scored in sixteen World Cup games, the same number of games Kane has played so far.
Pele has a slightly better goals-per-minute ratio, averaging a goal every 105 minutes in World Cups, compared to Kane’s 113 minutes. The match against Panama also saw Jordan Henderson become the first England player to participate in four FIFA World Cups after coming on as a substitute.
