France’s World Cup Hopes End in Semifinal
France faced a significant setback in the World Cup semifinal, falling 2-0 to Spain. This defeat ended France‘s aspirations of reaching a third consecutive final in the tournament. The match saw Spain, a team that has conceded only a single goal across seven World Cup games, advance to the final scheduled for Sunday.
The first goal for Spain came from a penalty awarded after Lucas Digne made contact with Lamine Yamal in the box. This decision drew strong reactions, particularly from France coach Didier Deschamps, who expressed his displeasure with the officiating.
Didier Deschamps openly questioned the referee’s performance in such a crucial match. He stated, through a translation from French, “Now, I’m asking you, and I’m not going to answer it: I don’t want to come across as a whiner because we lost, but did tonight’s referee have the level to officiate a World Cup semifinal?” He further clarified that his concerns were not limited to just the penalty but an “accumulation of things.” The referee for the match was Iván Barton from El Salvador.
The penalty incident involved Digne attempting to clear an errant Spanish cross. As he tried to kick the ball downfield, Yamal came from his blindside, resulting in Digne kicking the Spanish winger in the torso within the penalty area. Barton immediately signaled for the penalty, which Mikel Oyarzabal converted, giving Spain the lead and marking the first time France had trailed in the tournament. While technically a penalty due to contact in the box with an offensive player, the fact that Yamal did not possess the ball made the decision difficult for France to accept.
Collective Failure and Tactical Discipline
Beyond the officiating, former France captain and 1998 World Cup winner Patrick Vieira criticized the team’s performance. Vieira highlighted a collective failure among France‘s key players, including Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, and Michael Olise, stating they “didn’t turn up” when needed most. He observed that Spain outperformed France in every aspect of the game.
Vieira specifically mentioned Michael Olise, who had been an influential player for Didier Deschamps throughout the tournament. However, Olise struggled to make an impact against Spain‘s relentless pressing and tactical discipline. Vieira noted that Spain effectively prevented Olise from getting on the ball, which was crucial for France‘s attacking play.
Spain‘s victory was attributed to their disciplined approach and attacking quality. Luis de la Fuente‘s side controlled large portions of the match, limiting the opportunities for Mbappé, Dembélé, and Olise. They achieved this by denying France time on the ball, crowding Olise in central areas, and cutting off supply lines to Mbappé and Dembélé. This strategy proved highly effective, as France struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the evening.
The tactical plan implemented by Spain worked to perfection, allowing them to maintain control from the start and secure the win with goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro. For a French side that entered the tournament as one of the favorites, their attacking display against their first elite opponent in the knockout rounds was notably subdued.

Deschamps’ Farewell and Spain’s Path to the Final
For Didier Deschamps, who has coached France for 14 years and led them to the World Cup title in 2018, this semifinal loss marked his final opportunity to secure another World Cup championship. He plans to step down at the conclusion of the tournament, with Saturday’s third-place game being his last match in charge.
Despite the controversy surrounding the penalty, Spain‘s win was largely considered well-deserved. They were the superior team on both offense and defense throughout the semifinal match. Spain now stands one victory away from claiming their second World Cup championship, heading into Sunday’s final with significant confidence.
Spain‘s journey to the final has included eliminating strong teams such as Portugal, Belgium, and now France in successive knockout matches. This performance has solidified Luis de la Fuente‘s side’s position as a formidable contender for the 2026 World Cup title. They will face the winners of the second semifinal between defending champions Argentina and England in the upcoming final.
