Pedro Porro, the Spain right-back, recently played a significant role in his national team’s World Cup semi-final victory against France. Porro scored the second goal in Dallas, contributing to Spain’s progression to the final. His performance has also drawn attention to the evolving digital asset landscape surrounding both his club, Tottenham Hotspur, and the Spanish national team.
Porro’s goal came after he sprinted into the penalty area, connecting with a layoff from Dani Olmo and guiding the ball into the net. This goal was his second of the tournament. He later expressed that he could not have imagined such a moment, while his teammates celebrated the decisive strike.
Spain’s Dominance and Porro’s Impact
Spain’s victory was characterized by their control and mastery of the game, with Pau Cubarsí noting the team’s strategy of maintaining possession. France had limited opportunities to score, with Unai Simón making only one save from Ousmane Dembélé in the 94th minute, marking only the second shot on target for France. Spain has conceded only once throughout the entire tournament.
Before Porro’s goal, Mikel Oyarzabal scored a penalty to give Spain a 1-0 lead. Oyarzabal, known for his composure in high-stakes matches, has a history of scoring in finals, including a winning goal against England in the Euros two years prior. He has also contributed to Real Sociedad’s Copa del Rey titles. His penalty conversion rate stands at 89.65% from 53 attempts, having missed six.
Porro’s defensive contributions were also notable. When asked about balancing offensive and defensive duties, he mentioned adapting his play based on the opponent. He recalled an instance against Belgium where he primarily focused on defending against Jérémy Doku, only going forward once, which resulted in a goal. In the semi-final against France, he also made a singular decisive forward run.
The Spanish team, described as a “family” by their coach Luis de la Fuente, showcased a collective effort. Players like Marc Cucurella, Aymeric Laporte, Cubarsí, Rodri, and Fabián Ruiz were highlighted for their contributions. The team’s performance made France appear ordinary, emphasizing Spain’s collective strength rather than individual star power, with the exception of Lamine Yamal.
Among those watching the match were former Spanish players Xavi Hernández, Iker Casillas, Carles Puyol, and Sergio Ramos. Porro, who celebrated Spain’s 2010 World Cup win as a 10-year-old, is now on the verge of emulating that achievement. His grandfather, Antonio, who supported his early football journey, celebrated his birthday the day before the semi-final.
Digital Assets and Fan Engagement
Porro’s recent performance has also brought attention to the growing intersection of football and blockchain technology. Tottenham Hotspur has been developing its crypto strategy, including the $SPURS fan token, which trades near $0.10 with 24-hour volumes fluctuating between $10K and $140K as of early July 2026. The club’s fan token initiatives are managed through Socios.com, a platform powered by Chiliz (CHZ). Tottenham also has a multi-year partnership with Kraken, making it the club’s official crypto and Web3 partner and sleeve sponsor for both its men’s and women’s teams.
The Spanish national team also launched its own $SPAIN fan token on June 19, 2026, also via Socios.com. This token debuted at $1.00 and aims to provide supporters with voting rights and interactive experiences, particularly during major international tournaments. National team tokens are a newer development compared to club tokens, with their relevance typically peaking during events like the World Cup and continental championships.
Beyond fan tokens, Porro’s on-pitch achievements contribute to the digital collectibles market. His player cards are available on Sorare, a fantasy football platform that uses blockchain technology for buying, selling, and trading NFT-based cards of real players. While no significant price spike in Porro-related digital assets was confirmed immediately after the match, strong performances in prominent games, especially at the international level, often lead to short-term increases in interest for associated digital assets. The Kraken-Tottenham partnership signifies a trend where major exchanges engage in multi-year sponsorships to gain visibility among football fans and help clubs build Web3 infrastructure around their brands. Chiliz, the Layer 1 blockchain underpinning Socios.com, plays a central role in this ecosystem, as its native token, CHZ, is required for purchasing fan tokens on the platform.
