Kristi Noem dismissed as Secretary of Homeland Security

Kristi Noem has been dismissed from her role as Secretary of Homeland Security, effective March 31, 2026. Donald Trump announced that Markwayne Mullin will take over the position, marking the first major cabinet-level shake-up of Trump’s second term.

Noem, who has been a prominent figure in the Trump administration’s immigration policies, faced increasing scrutiny during her tenure. Her leadership was called into question following the shooting of two US citizens by federal officers, which led to calls for her resignation during congressional hearings. Pramila Jayapal, a member of Congress, stated, “Yours is a case of failed leadership. Secretary, you need to resign, be fired or be impeached because you don’t have the right to lead this agency.”

During her time at DHS, Noem was involved in a $220 million advertising campaign promoting border security, emphasizing her commitment to the administration’s objectives. “We have made historic accomplishments at the Department of Homeland Security to make America safe again,” Noem remarked, highlighting her efforts to bolster national security.

Despite her contributions, Noem’s tenure was marred by controversy, and she was reassigned to be a special envoy for a new security initiative called ‘Shield of the Americas.’ This reassignment comes after Trump praised her for her service and results during her time at DHS, indicating a complex relationship between the former Secretary and the administration.

Markwayne Mullin, who has served as a US senator since 2023, is expected to bring a new approach to the Department of Homeland Security. Trump expressed confidence in Mullin’s ability to address border security issues, stating, “Markwayne will work tirelessly to Keep our Border Secure, Stop Migrant Crime, Murderers, and other Criminals from illegally entering our Country, End the Scourge of Illegal Drugs and, MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN.”

Noem, who is 54 years old and has been married to Bryon Noem for over three decades, has been a controversial figure due to her immigration policies and the circumstances surrounding her dismissal. Observers are keenly watching how Mullin will navigate the challenges ahead and what this transition means for the future of immigration policy in the United States.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific reasons behind Noem’s dismissal and how her reassignment will impact the ongoing initiatives at DHS.
