Airlines Face Disruptions Amid Regional Tensions
“We are working around the clock to organise additional relief flights where operationally possible and will share further updates as soon as they are confirmed,” stated a spokesperson for Qatar Airways as the airline announced the suspension of scheduled flights due to the closure of Qatari airspace.
The suspension of flights by Qatar Airways is set to remain in effect until the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority confirms that the airspace is safe to reopen. This decision comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly linked to the ongoing US-Israel–Iran conflict, which has led to widespread disruption of air traffic across the region.
In a bid to assist stranded passengers, Israeli airlines such as El Al, Israir, and Arkia are preparing to resume limited outbound flights, with a maximum capacity of 70 passengers per flight. Ben Gurion Airport has partially reopened for inbound flights, facilitating the repatriation of approximately 120,000 Israelis stranded abroad. Transportation Minister Miri Regev emphasized, “This will be conducted in accordance with the recommendations of defense officials and in accordance with security developments,” highlighting the careful approach being taken in light of the current situation.
Passengers on Israeli airlines are advised to utilize an early check-in program and arrive at the airport 1.5 hours prior to their scheduled departure. The Transportation Ministry has also reserved 15% of all outbound seats for humanitarian, security, diplomatic, or tourist cases, ensuring that those in urgent need can return home.
Flydubai has announced its intention to resume flight operations to Ben Gurion Airport to assist in bringing back stranded Israelis. Qatar Airways is also working on organizing additional relief flights and will notify affected passengers directly, as they navigate the complexities of the current airspace restrictions.
As of now, approximately 28,000 tourists remain in Israel, with 15,000 Israelis having returned home via land border crossings. An estimated 6,040 Israelis are expected to return home on Friday, utilizing the limited flight operations available. On this day, a total of 34 aircraft operated by El Al, Arkia, and Israir are scheduled to take to the skies.
Qatar Airways has urged passengers not to proceed to the airport unless they have received an official notification confirming their flight, as the situation remains unpredictable. “We sincerely apologise for the disruption caused and thank passengers for their patience and understanding,” the airline added, acknowledging the challenges faced by travelers during this tumultuous period.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact date when Qatari airspace will reopen, leaving many passengers and airlines in a state of uncertainty as they await further updates from authorities.
