Álvaro cortés: Rising Star in Barcelona’s Defense
Álvaro Cortés Set to Make His Mark
Álvaro Cortés, a left-footed centre-back known for his strong physical presence and leadership qualities, is poised to make his official debut for FC Barcelona. With injuries sidelining key players Jules Koundé and Alejandro Balde for over a month, Cortés’s inclusion in the squad comes at a crucial time.
Trained with the first team on Thursday, Cortés is expected to be called up for the upcoming matches against Athletic Club and Newcastle United. Barcelona will first travel to Bilbao for a La Liga clash on Matchday 27 before heading directly to England for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 at St James’ Park.
Hansi Flick, the coach, has praised Cortés for his training performance, noting, “He can play as a full-back or a central defender and works well both with and without the ball.” His versatility is a significant asset, allowing Gerard Martin to return to his natural position at left-back.
Cortés has previously been included in matchday squads but has yet to step onto the pitch for an official game. His rise through the ranks of La Masia has opened opportunities for young talents, especially in light of the current injury crisis.
Flick also expressed confidence in fellow player Xavi Espart, stating, “In the case of Espart, I like his confidence with the ball. He is similar to Philipp Lahm.” Both players have shown their quality during training, and Flick remarked, “I can’t wait to see them play.”
Barcelona’s upcoming matches are critical, not only for securing points in La Liga but also for advancing in the Champions League. The team’s performance in these fixtures could set the tone for the remainder of the season.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact lineup for the matches, but the expectation is high for Cortés to step up and make a significant impact as he fills the void left by injured teammates.
