Argentina’s Paredes avoids automatic ban after World Cup final incident

Following the World Cup final, a confrontation involving several Argentina players and staff marred the celebrations of Spain‘s 1-0 victory. Among those involved were Argentina’s Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina, and Thiago Almada, along with assistant coach Roberto Ayala. The incident occurred on the pitch as Spain celebrated their win.

During the fracas, Paredes reportedly confronted Spain’s Eric Garcia, appearing to push him by the throat. Unused substitute Gavi attempted to intervene but was subsequently forced to the ground by Almada. Paredes also pushed Gavi, a Barcelona midfielder, to the turf by placing his hand on the Spaniard’s face.

Initially, there were reports that Paredes had received a red card from referee Slavko Vincic for his actions against Garcia. However, this information, which appeared on FIFA‘s commentator information system, was later deleted. FIFA has since confirmed that no disciplinary action was taken at the time of the match, meaning Paredes did not receive an automatic suspension.

Gavi’s Perspective and FIFA’s Ongoing Investigation

Despite being directly involved in the incident, Spain midfielder Gavi expressed his view that Paredes should not face a suspension. Speaking to El Partidazo de COPE, Gavi stated, “I don’t think [Paredes] should be suspended.” He acknowledged that the incident might not present a positive image for younger audiences but suggested that such physicality is part of football. Gavi added that the most logical outcome would have been a sending-off during the match itself, rather than a retrospective suspension.

While Paredes avoided an automatic ban, the matter is not entirely closed. FIFA has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to assess the events that transpired. This investigation could lead to suspensions for any players or coaches found to be involved, and the Argentine Football Association might also face a fine. The disciplinary committee is actively investigating incidents involving several Argentina personnel.

Other individuals under review include Nahuel Molina, who reportedly punched Rodri in the chest, and Thiago Almada, who also struck Gavi. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala is also being investigated for hitting Dani Olmo. Ayala later commented on the incident, stating it was “more of a shove than a punch” and expressed a desire to apologize to Olmo in person. He admitted it was a mistake and took responsibility for his actions, attributing them to high adrenaline in the moment.

Ayala reflected on the emotional aftermath of the final, noting the warm welcome the team received back in Buenos Aires helped to calm things. He acknowledged the disappointment of the loss and the replay of the match in his mind, but ultimately viewed the team’s performance over nearly eight years as positive. He also conceded that Spain was superior and deserving of the World Cup title, playing a style of football that many appreciate.

The refereeing during the final also drew comments. Ayala mentioned that the referee had his own approach to the game, allowing some smaller fouls to go uncalled. He felt the first yellow card leading to Enzo Fernandez‘s dismissal was rushed, though he considered the second yellow, given for a forceful challenge, to be justified. Fernandez was indeed dismissed during the final after receiving a second yellow card in second-half added time.

FIFA is continuing to gather reports and footage related to the post-match events. The governing body is also reviewing other incidents from the tournament, including a banner supporting Argentina’s claims regarding the Falkland Islands after their semi-final match against England. Further action cannot be ruled out once the disciplinary process concludes.

The decision to not automatically ban Paredes came a day after the brawl at MetLife Stadium, where Spain secured their victory.
