Arsenal is reportedly exploring a move for Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr., whose future at the Spanish club remains uncertain. Discussions between Real Madrid and Vinicius Jr.’s agents regarding a contract renewal, which began over a year and a half ago, have not yet resulted in an agreement. His current contract is set to expire in 2027.
Sources indicate that Arsenal views Vinicius Jr. as a primary target to enhance their attack. The idea of pursuing a deal for the Brazil international has received approval from Arsenal’s owners. A move to Arsenal is said to appeal to Vinicius Jr. if he does not extend his contract with Real Madrid, and an agreement on personal terms is anticipated should he decide to join the Premier League club.
Contractual Standoff
The financial disparities between Real Madrid and Vinicius Jr. are reportedly substantial. Conversations are scheduled to take place in the coming days to address the situation, with the player expected to return to training soon. Three potential outcomes are being considered: a contract extension with Real Madrid, a departure as a free agent next summer, or a move to Arsenal now.
Vinicius Jr. joined Real Madrid in 2018 from Flamengo. He agreed to new terms in 2022, extending his contract until 2027. At that time, his camp reportedly favoured a shorter renewal, aiming to renegotiate improved terms sooner.
Sources close to Vinicius Jr.’s camp suggest that a renewal bonus has been a key point of contention. This is reportedly seen as a way to increase his earnings, especially when compared to teammate Kylian Mbappe, who received a significant signing bonus upon joining Real Madrid as a free agent in 2024. Real Madrid has reportedly been hesitant to agree to a renewal bonus, citing concerns about setting a precedent within the squad.
Arsenal’s Strategic Interest
Aware of the ongoing contract dispute and its potential impact on the player, Arsenal has reportedly been working behind the scenes for several months to position themselves for a deal. Key figures at Arsenal have communicated to Vinicius Jr.’s representatives that he would be a central figure in their project, led by manager Mikel Arteta. Arsenal won the Premier League last season and reached the Champions League final, losing on penalties to PSG.
Arteta is said to be a strong admirer of Vinicius Jr., with one source stating, “Mikel Arteta loves him. If he doesn’t renew, we will be there.” Arsenal is reportedly prepared to make an exception to its usual salary structure for a player of Vinicius Jr.’s caliber. A sign-on bonus and image rights could also be part of the financial package.

Real Madrid faces the prospect of losing Vinicius Jr. as a free agent next summer if no agreement is reached, a scenario that some within the club reportedly fear. Arsenal hopes to leverage this contract situation to negotiate a reduced transfer fee. The club’s owners have approved the projected financial figures for a potential deal, anticipating that the expenditure could be offset by significant commercial benefits. Arsenal believes Vinicius Jr.’s arrival could elevate the club’s brand and potentially make him a prominent figure in the Premier League.
While the pursuit of Vinicius Jr. is primarily driven by football objectives, Arsenal recognizes that few players can add a new dimension to their title-winning squad. The club has undertaken extensive work on this potential transfer, acknowledging the challenges involved in securing such a high-profile signing. Arsenal is operating under the impression that Vinicius Jr. would be open to joining.
Arteta Expects Further Squad Reinforcements
Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has indicated that he expects further additions to the squad in the coming weeks. Following Arsenal’s 4-1 victory over Girona in a friendly match, Arteta stated that the club would not “sit still” as they prepare to defend their Premier League title. He emphasized the team’s ambition to improve and increase internal competition.

Arsenal has already made some moves in the transfer market, including the signing of goalkeeper Illan Meslier and forward Christos Tzolis. Defender Piero Hincapie has also joined permanently after a loan spell. Tzolis scored on his debut against Girona, with Kai Havertz, Max Dowman, and Gabriel Jesus also contributing goals in the friendly.
Arteta declined to comment on specific transfer reports linking Arsenal to players like Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United and Vinicius Jr. He reiterated the club’s desire to get better and highlighted the competitive nature of the transfer market.
