Manu Bhaker, a double Olympic medallist, has called on young people to refrain from using abusive language. She emphasised that “using bad language is not cool” and suggested that an individual’s choice of words reflects their personality. The 23-year-old shooter, who secured two medals at the Paris Olympics, shared a detailed message on social media recently.

Bhaker’s message did not specify any particular incident but highlighted a perceived increase in the use of abusive language in daily conversations. She stressed the importance of choosing words carefully, as they contribute to shaping a person’s character over time. According to Bhaker, the language people use reveals their personality and who they are as individuals.

“The language we choose reflects our personality and the kind of person we are. Choose your words wisely, because over time, you become what you think, what you speak, and what you practice,” Bhaker stated. She reiterated, “Using bad language is not cool. Abusing is not cool.”

Bhaker further clarified that the concept of being “cool” is unrelated to the use of abusive language. She offered a simpler definition of what being cool entails: being hardworking, kind, respectful towards oneself and others, striving for success through honesty, and bringing pride to one’s parents and country. She concluded that these qualities define what is truly “cool.”

Call for positivity and responsibility

Explaining her decision to speak out on this issue, Bhaker noted that abusive language has gradually become normalised, particularly among younger generations. She observed a shift in how such language is perceived over the past few years, with many now considering it “cool.” Bhaker pointed out that people are casually using degrading and disrespectful language in everyday interactions without fully realising its impact.

The two-time Olympic medal-winning shooter also urged social media influencers to act more responsibly. She encouraged them to reduce toxicity and instead promote positivity. Bhaker, who frequently shares glimpses of her life on social media, used a recent post to convey a more serious message about the inappropriate use of these platforms, especially by influencers.

Bhaker highlighted the unpredictable nature of life and encouraged people to be kind to one another. She noted that everyone, including the younger generation, has access to social media and learns from it, making it crucial to provide positive influences. While acknowledging that some influencers are doing good work, she also mentioned those who are overly critical and make negative comments.

She questioned the necessity of negativity, stating that no one has achieved success by attempting to bring others down. Bhaker emphasised that negative comments can significantly impact a person, either positively or negatively. From a personal perspective, she shared that it feels good to receive support during both good and challenging times. She advised cherishing one’s life and the people around them.

Bhaker made history at the Paris Olympics 2024 by becoming the first Indian athlete in the post-Independence era to win two medals at a single Olympic Games. She earned a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event and another bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event. Additionally, she recently secured a bronze medal in the 25m pistol event at the ISSF World Cup in Hangzhou, China.
