Chelsea has officially announced the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The 23-year-old forward has agreed to a contract at Stamford Bridge that extends until 2033 and is set to join Xabi Alonso‘s squad for the upcoming 2026/27 season.

The transfer fee for Rogers has been agreed at £117 million, marking a record for a British player. This club-record deal was finalized after a period of intense negotiations. Sources close to the deal indicate that formal discussions between Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Rogers’ representatives began on a Thursday, following England’s semi-final defeat in the World Cup.

A significant factor in Rogers’ decision was a phone call from Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso on a Friday, where Alonso outlined his plans for the player. Personal terms were agreed upon the same day. This swift action by Chelsea, which included involvement from owners and sporting directors, was seen as a strong signal of their commitment to securing Rogers’ signature.

Rogers was a primary target for Chelsea, who prioritized signing a versatile attacker capable of immediately contributing to the team. Alonso and the club value his ability to play across various attacking and midfield positions, including on the left, right, as a ‘No 10’, ‘false nine’, and deeper in midfield. His physical attributes, size, and attitude were also noted as positive aspects, with Rogers described as humble and without ego, someone who can fit well within the dressing room.

During his conversation with Rogers, Alonso conveyed his desire to bring him to the club since his appointment in May, detailing how he envisioned Rogers’ role. Rogers arrives at Chelsea with a strong reputation as one of the Premier League‘s leading young attacking talents. During his tenure at Aston Villa, his contributions included goals and assists that played a part in 40 goals across 85 Premier League appearances. He helped guide the Midlands club to a top-four finish and subsequently to lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy last season.

His performances also earned him a place in the England national team. Since making his senior debut for England in November 2024, Rogers has become a regular for the Three Lions, accumulating 22 caps and representing his country at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.

Aston Villa had been keen to retain Rogers, with manager Unai Emery considering him among the club’s best players and one of the top five in the Premier League. Rogers had signed a third new contract in less than two years in November. However, to comply with financial regulations and reshape their squad, Villa accepted the need to sell key assets.

While Rogers was not actively seeking a move, sources close to the player and the club believed that this summer presented the opportune moment for his departure, allowing Villa to maximize his value. Villa had anticipated Rogers’ departure would progress once England’s World Cup campaign concluded.

Chelsea’s interest in Rogers dates back to before his move to Villa from Middlesbrough in January 2024, and resurfaced in January 2025 and again last summer. The club’s strong relationship with Villa facilitated the negotiations. Chelsea had informed Rogers’ representatives earlier in the summer that they would not pursue a move while England was still competing in the World Cup to avoid any distractions.
