Egypt advances to knockout stage after 1-1 draw with Iran in Seattle

Egypt has secured its place in the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in its history, following a 1-1 draw against Iran in a Group G match held in Seattle. The result means Egypt finished second in the group, while Iran faces an anxious wait to determine its fate in the expanded 48-team tournament.

The match, promoted as a “Pride Match,” saw both teams make history with their fastest goals in World Cup play. Egypt’s Mahmoud Saber opened the scoring in the fifth minute, with an assist from former Liverpool star Mohamed Salah. Saber’s shot found its way past Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand. However, Iran quickly responded, with Ramin Rezaeian levelling the score nine minutes later, in the 14th minute.

Dramatic Moments and VAR Intervention

The game was marked by several dramatic moments, particularly in the second half. Iran had a significant opportunity to take the lead when Mohamed Abdelmonem fouled Mehdi Taremi in the penalty area. Taremi, the Iran captain, stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir made a crucial save, diving correctly to deny the goal.

Later, Iran nearly clinched a late victory in stoppage time. Shoja Khalilzadeh appeared to score in the 93rd minute, sparking celebrations among Iran fans at Seattle Stadium. However, the goal was overturned after a video review, with VAR determining that a part of Khalilzadeh’s boot was in an offside position during the build-up. Had this goal stood, Iran would have secured a berth in the knockout round.

Despite the disallowed goal, Iran continued to press, with Saeid Ezatolahi hitting the crossbar shortly after. The team finished the match with an expected goals value of 1.94, which is their highest xG in a World Cup match, surpassing their 1.88 against the USA in 1998.

Group G Standings and Player Performances

Belgium topped Group G after a decisive 5-1 victory over New Zealand in Vancouver, British Columbia. Belgium had previously drawn 1-1 with Egypt on June 15. Egypt’s draw with Iran ensured their progression as the second-placed team in the group.

Mohamed Salah, a key player for Egypt, was substituted just before the hour mark, having played 57 minutes, his fewest in a World Cup match. He was seen with an ice pack on his left leg on the bench. His previous low was 76 minutes against Belgium earlier in the tournament. Salah’s assist for Saber’s goal marked a strong contribution during his time on the field.

For Iran, Ramin Rezaeian’s goal was his third in World Cup play, moving him past Mehdi Taremi as the leading Iranian goalscorer in the tournament’s history. Rezaeian also has four goal involvements, including three goals and one assist, which is the most for Iran in World Cup history. Trezeguet‘s assist for Mahmoud Saber’s goal was his second goal involvement in two matches at this World Cup, having had none in his three matches in 2018.

Looking Ahead

Egypt is now set to face Australia in Dallas in the next round. Iran, despite finishing the group stage unbeaten, now faces an anxious wait to see if their three points will be sufficient to qualify for the round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams. Iran is only the third Asian nation to complete the group stage of a World Cup without a loss, joining Japan (2002 and 2026) and South Korea (2002).

The match also saw a high number of yellow cards in the first half, with both Egypt and Iran receiving two each. This was the only instance in this year’s World Cup where four or more yellow cards were shown in a single first half. The draw between Egypt and Iran was also the third different World Cup match on the day between teams from Asia and Africa, a rare occurrence as there had never been more than one such meeting on a single date prior to June 27, 2026.
