Chopra’s Strategic Approach to Javelin

Neeraj Chopra, a two-time Olympic medallist and reigning world champion, has articulated his strategic approach to javelin, emphasising major titles and consistent performance over an exclusive focus on the 90-metre throw mark. Chopra, who achieved a personal best of 90.23m at the Doha Diamond League last year, views securing gold in major competitions as his primary objective, with distance being a secondary consideration.

He acknowledges that external factors, such as weather conditions, significantly influence javelin competitions. This understanding reinforces his belief that consistency is crucial, especially when challenging conditions make big throws difficult. Chopra is preparing for potentially tough weather, including rain and gusty winds, at the upcoming Commonwealth Games, highlighting the importance of mental strength in such scenarios.

Chopra’s return to the Commonwealth Games holds special significance for him, as it was at the 2018 Gold Coast edition where he won his first senior international gold medal, marking the beginning of his senior career. He missed the 2022 Birmingham edition due to injury, making his return to the Games after an eight-year hiatus.

Competition and Fitness

The men’s javelin event has seen increased competition, particularly in Asia. Chopra regularly competes against athletes such as Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem and Sri Lanka’s Diamond League winner Rumesh Pathirage. Chopra views this heightened competition as a positive development, believing it pushes athletes to improve. He noted that the field at the Commonwealth Games is tough, featuring medallists from the Olympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games, all of whom perform in the Diamond League.

Chopra arrived in Glasgow on Saturday morning, joining the athletics and para-athletics contingent. He expressed that his fitness is currently good, having played his first competition in Doha after recovering from injury. He focused on addressing his weaknesses and improving his fitness during his rehabilitation. Chopra mentioned that he had been in Switzerland for preparations and increased the intensity of his workouts and fitness regime after the Doha Diamond League.

His only appearance since then was at the Doha Diamond League, where he placed fourth with an 85.69m throw. Chopra has adopted a cautious approach to his return to competition, having previously dealt with ankle, shoulder, wrist, and adductor issues in recent years. He will be joined by Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh in the men’s javelin throw event.

Anticipating Challenging Conditions

Upon his arrival in Glasgow, Chopra observed the cloudy and rainy weather conditions. He expressed hope for warmer weather on his competition day. Despite the potential for adverse weather, he remains focused on performing well, stating that tough conditions are the same for all competitors. He emphasises the need to stay mentally strong and produce the best possible throw even in challenging circumstances.

Chopra’s long-term objective includes improving his personal best throw. He believes that while conditions can make achieving greater distances difficult, maintaining consistency is equally important. The nature of competition in javelin has evolved significantly over the past eight years, with a strong emphasis on consistent performance under varied conditions.

The men’s javelin throw qualification is scheduled for July 30.
