Real madrid: Struggles Continue with 1-0 Loss to Getafe in LaLiga
By Rohan Mehta / 03.03.2026
Real Madrid was unable to close the gap on Barcelona in LaLiga as Martin Satriano’s stunning goal led to a 1-0 loss against Getafe, with both sides ending the match with 10 players.
Deprived of several key players, including Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham, Alvaro Arbeloa’s squad faced their second consecutive league loss, with Franco Mastantuono receiving a red card for dissent and Adrian Liso being sent off for timewasting just before the final whistle.
Match Summary and Key Events
Goalkeeper David Soria was kept busy during the initial 25 minutes, thwarting Vinicius Junior with his feet and parrying Arda Guler’s angled shot. However, Real Madrid might consider themselves lucky to have maintained a full squad when Antonio Rudiger recklessly brought his knee down onto Diego Rico’s head.
Getafe took the lead against the flow of the game just six minutes before the break, as Satriano’s beautifully executed volley from the edge of the box soared past Thibaut Courtois and nestled into the top-right corner.
Real Madrid maintained control of the ball during the second half, yet they faced discontent from their supporters as they struggled to break through, culminating in a missed opportunity in the 75th minute.
Player Red Cards Impact
Rudiger managed to reach Soria to connect with Mastantuono’s corner, yet the German’s header veered wide of the open goal, with teammate Dean Huijsen also failing to make contact near the left post.
Shortly after, another cross from Mastantuono reached Rodrygo, but his diving header ricocheted off the goal and went wide, with Dani Carvajal unable to convert it into a score.
Things took a turn for the worse for Real Madrid when referee Alejandro Muniz Ruiz issued a straight red card to Mastantuono for dissent in the 95th minute. Shortly after, Getafe’s Liso received a second yellow card for kicking the ball away just before the final whistle blew.
Key Players Missing from Squad
Data Recap: Bordalas secures victory over Real Madrid
Prior to this encounter, Real Madrid had achieved 16 consecutive home victories against Getafe in LaLiga, only surpassing this streak with 18 wins in a row against Racing Santander from 1952 to 1994.
Moreover, Getafe’s manager Jose Bordalas had encountered Real Madrid 16 times in LaLiga without securing a win (two draws, 14 losses), making them the only team he has faced repeatedly without achieving a single victory.
Goalkeeping Performance Analysis
However, that streak of misfortune came to an end on a remarkable evening for Getafe, who surged past Girona and Sevilla to secure the 11th position in the tightly packed LaLiga standings. With three victories in their last four matches (and just one loss), they now find themselves eight points above the relegation zone.
Real Madrid controlled 77.1% of the possession, outperformed Getafe with 18 shots to nine, and led in expected goals (xG) at 1.57 compared to 0.49. However, they failed to capitalize on these advantages and remain four points behind Barcelona.
