Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on March 5, 2026, by President Droupadi Murmu, succeeding Vinai Kumar Saxena in this key administrative role.

Born on January 23, 1963, in Punjab, Sandhu comes from a distinguished family with a legacy of public service. His grandfather, Teja Singh Samundri, was a prominent freedom fighter, while his father, Bishan Singh Samundri, served as the founding Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University.

Sandhu’s educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and a Master’s in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1988, marking the beginning of a notable diplomatic career spanning over 35 years.

His most recent diplomatic role was as the Indian Ambassador to the United States from 2020 to 2024, where he was recognized as one of India’s prominent experts on U.S. relations. Prior to that, he served as the High Commissioner to Sri Lanka from January 2017 to January 2020 and as Consul General in Frankfurt from 2011 to 2013.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Sandhu contested from the Amritsar constituency, securing approximately 22.88% of the votes and finishing in third place. Following this electoral experience, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on March 19, 2024, further solidifying his political ambitions.
