India Claims Historic Victory
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, India won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title for a record third time by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 9, 2026.
The match saw India set a formidable target of 256 runs, showcasing their batting prowess. New Zealand, however, struggled to chase down the target and was bowled out for 159 runs in just 19 overs. Jasprit Bumrah was instrumental in India’s victory, earning the Player of the Match award for his outstanding performance, taking 4 wickets.
Celebrations and Rewards
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a bonus of $14.24 million for the victorious team, reflecting the significance of this achievement. The total prize money for the tournament was $11.25 million, with India also receiving $2.34 million for their win.
India’s victory was met with widespread celebrations across the country, with fans rejoicing in the streets and midnight celebrations marking the historic win. Droupadi Murmu, the President of India, expressed pride in the team’s accomplishment, stating, “India has the proud distinction of being the only country to win the cup three times.”
A Historic Achievement
CP Radhakrishnan, a prominent figure in Indian cricket, remarked, “With a history-making and commanding performance in the final, India has become the first team to win three ICC Men’s T20 World Cup titles.” This victory not only highlights India’s dominance in T20 cricket but also reinforces its position in the global sports arena.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the team’s efforts, stating, “By winning the T20 Cricket World Cup, Team India has proven that the confluence of determination, restraint, and self-confidence is the fundamental mantra for success in life.” Amit Shah, the Home Minister, added, “The team’s exceptional performance throughout the tournament and the vigorous display of mettle has brought glory and pride for the nation.”
Looking Ahead
As India celebrates this monumental victory, the cricketing community looks forward to the future. The team aims to build on this success as they set their sights on winning a gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, further solidifying their legacy in sports.
