lpg gas cylinders — IN news

Recent Developments

On March 11, 2026, the price of LPG gas cylinders in India saw a significant increase, affecting both domestic and commercial users. This rise comes amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly related to Iran and the broader Middle East crisis, which have implications for global energy supplies.

Price Increases

The price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder has increased by ₹60, bringing the cost in major cities to new heights. In New Delhi, the price now stands at ₹913, while in Kolkata, it has reached ₹939. Other cities have also experienced similar hikes, with Mumbai’s domestic cylinder priced at ₹912.50 and Chennai’s at ₹928.50. The commercial LPG cylinders have seen an even steeper increase, with a rise of ₹144, making them ₹1,884.50 in New Delhi, ₹1,988.50 in Kolkata, ₹1,836 in Mumbai, and ₹2,043.50 in Chennai.

Supply Issues

Compounding the price increases, reports have emerged of inconsistent supply for commercial LPG cylinders, which has raised concerns among businesses, particularly restaurants and hotels. The Bangalore Hotels Association stated, “The supply of gas cylinders for commercial use has been stopped from today,” indicating a serious disruption in availability.

Contrasting Statements

In contrast, PN Seth, Executive President of the All India LPG Distributors Federation, reassured the public, stating, “There is no shortage, and supply of commercial and domestic cylinders is continuing as usual.” This discrepancy highlights the uncertainty surrounding the current state of LPG supplies in the country.

India imports around 60 percent of its total LPG demand, primarily from the Middle East. This heavy reliance on imports makes the country particularly vulnerable to fluctuations in global oil prices and geopolitical tensions. The recent price hikes are a reflection of these external pressures, which have been exacerbated by the ongoing crisis in the region.

Current State

As of now, consumers and businesses are grappling with the immediate impacts of these price increases and supply inconsistencies. The exact duration of the LPG supply shortage is unclear, and details remain unconfirmed. The uncertainty surrounding future LPG prices is also a concern, as geopolitical tensions continue to evolve.

Implications for Stakeholders

This sequence of events matters significantly for both consumers and businesses. For households, the increased cost of domestic LPG cylinders directly affects monthly budgets, while for commercial entities, the inconsistent supply can disrupt operations and lead to increased costs being passed on to consumers. The situation underscores the interconnectedness of global energy markets and local economies.
