rajya sabha election — IN news

“The BJP has been engaged in horse-trading-like activities to bring MLAs from other parties in Odisha over to its side,” stated Naveen Patnaik, the Chief Minister of Odisha, reflecting the intense political maneuvering surrounding the recent Rajya Sabha elections.

The elections, held on March 16, 2026, resulted in the BJP winning three out of four available Rajya Sabha seats from Odisha. The victorious candidates include Manmohan Samal, Sujeet Kumar, and Dilip Ray, with Santrupt Mishra representing the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

Dilip Ray, notably, was an independent candidate backed by the BJP, and his victory was aided by cross-voting from 11 MLAs of the BJD and Congress. This election marked the first contested Rajya Sabha polls in Odisha in 12 years, underscoring the significance of the results.

The BJP currently holds a majority in the Odisha Assembly, with approximately 79 MLAs, which contributed to its strong performance in the elections. However, the process was not without controversy, as allegations of horse-trading and vote-buying surfaced during the campaign.

Reports indicated that four individuals were arrested in Bengaluru for allegedly attempting to bribe MLAs with blank cheques to secure votes for BJP-supported candidates. Such claims have fueled the ongoing political drama in the state.

“The elections saw intense drama, including allegations of horse-trading, vote-buying accusations from the opposition, and a temporary halt in voting over ballot paper disputes,” a source familiar with the proceedings noted.

This outcome reflects the BJP’s strengthened grip on Odisha politics following its historic victory in the 2024 Assembly elections. The party’s ability to secure a majority in the Rajya Sabha is seen as a consolidation of its influence in the region.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the implications of these results will likely be felt in future legislative sessions and party strategies. The BJP’s success in the Rajya Sabha elections may pave the way for further initiatives and policies aligned with its agenda in Odisha.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full impact of these elections on the state’s political dynamics, but the BJP’s recent performance suggests a significant shift in the balance of power.
