By Rohan Mehta / 16.03.2026
Aryna Sabalenka won the 2026 Indian Wells title on March 15, defeating Elena Rybakina in a thrilling three-set final with scores of 3–6, 6–3, 7–6 (8–6). The match showcased Sabalenka’s resilience as she saved a championship point during a tense tiebreaker, which ultimately decided the match.
The final was played under intense heat conditions, adding to the challenge for both players. Rybakina delivered a powerful serve, reaching speeds of 121 mph, but Sabalenka’s determination shone through as she fought back from a set down.
This victory marks Sabalenka’s 23rd career singles title, a significant milestone in her professional journey. After the match, she celebrated her win in a unique way, dunking her head in an ice cooler, a moment that captured the joy of her achievement.
In her post-match remarks, Sabalenka expressed her happiness, stating, “What a week. Getting a puppy, getting engaged and winning a title – I will definitely remember it for the rest of my life.” Her victory at Indian Wells comes after a previous loss to Rybakina in the 2023 final, making this win particularly sweet.
Martina Navratilova praised Sabalenka’s performance, noting the critical moment when she saved the match point, saying, “The way she saved that match point, I screamed. She hit three quality shots.” Meanwhile, Tim Henman reflected on the match’s intensity, commenting, “It’s one of those scenarios where you just feel sad that somebody has to lose and Rybakina came so very close with that match point. An amazing match.”
As part of her celebration plans, Sabalenka mentioned she intends to enjoy two Espresso Martinis and food from Five Guys, a fitting way to unwind after such a demanding match.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further implications of this victory for Sabalenka’s ranking or future tournaments, but her performance at Indian Wells has undoubtedly solidified her status as a top contender in women’s tennis.
