Kolkata Weather Update: Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Expected
As Kolkata approaches mid-March, the city is experiencing significant weather changes. On March 16, a squall with wind speeds reaching 72 KMPH swept through the area, resulting in a notable drop in the minimum temperature by 5 degrees Celsius.
By March 17, the minimum temperature in Kolkata had fallen to 18.4 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) responded to these developments by issuing a yellow alert for the city, anticipating thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.
On the same day, the IMD reported that several districts, including North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad, Birbhum, Jhargram, and West Midnapore, could expect gusty winds between 30–40 KMPH.
In terms of rainfall, 16 cm was recorded at Sankos Tea Estate in Alipurduar, marking the highest precipitation in the region. Meanwhile, Tusuma in Purulia saw 3 cm of rainfall, with several other locations reporting 1 cm each.
The IMD has also warned of possible lightning strikes, potential damage to weak structures and huts, falling tree branches, and disruptions to power and communication lines. Additionally, standing crops may be at risk due to the severe weather conditions.
Looking ahead, light rain is forecasted for March 18 across districts such as Purulia, Bankura, East and West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia. From March 19, rainfall activity is expected to increase again, with light to moderate rain or thundershowers likely in several places.
On March 20, widespread rain and thunderstorms are anticipated across many districts, with gusty winds potentially reaching 50–60 KMPH. Residents are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions as the weather continues to evolve.
This sequence of weather events is significant for the people of Kolkata and surrounding areas, as it may impact daily life, agriculture, and infrastructure. The IMD’s warnings serve as a crucial reminder of the potential dangers associated with severe weather.
