Nandita Gorlosa Joins Congress Ahead of Assam Elections
“We are very happy to announce that Nandita Gorlosa has joined the Congress party,” a spokesperson for Congress stated on March 23, 2026, following Gorlosa’s defection from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Nandita Gorlosa, a sitting Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Haflong (ST) constituency, was elected in 2021 on a BJP ticket. During her tenure, she held ministerial positions overseeing portfolios such as mines and minerals and tribal faith and culture.
Her departure from the BJP came after she was denied a ticket for the upcoming assembly elections, with the party instead nominating Rupali Langthasa for the Haflong seat. This decision prompted Gorlosa to seek a new political home.
On the same day she joined Congress, the party announced that it would replace its initial candidate, Nirmal Langthasa, with Gorlosa for the Haflong constituency. This strategic move reflects Gorlosa’s established support base among tribal communities in her area.
The Assam Assembly elections are scheduled for April 9, 2026, with votes set to be counted on May 4, 2026. Gorlosa’s switch to Congress occurred just before the nomination deadline, highlighting the urgency of her decision.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, a senior BJP leader, commented on Gorlosa’s situation, stating, “I had spoken to her and she seemed satisfied,” indicating that her departure was not without prior discussions.
The political landscape in Assam is rapidly evolving as candidates finalize their positions ahead of the elections. Gorlosa’s move is seen as a significant shift that could impact voter sentiment in Haflong.
As the election date approaches, all eyes will be on how Gorlosa’s new affiliation with Congress influences her political career and the dynamics within the constituency.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full implications of her switch and how it will affect the upcoming elections.
