Pakistan Navy
The Pakistan Navy assisted the Indian vessel MV Gautam on May 5, 2026, in the Arabian Sea. This operation marks a rare example of maritime cooperation between India and Pakistan.
The MV Gautam had seven crew members on board, including six Indian nationals and one Indonesian. The ship suffered a critical technical failure while traveling from Oman to India.
Upon receiving a distress signal, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Mumbai contacted Pakistani authorities for assistance. In response, the Pakistan Navy dispatched the ship PMSS Kashmir to locate the distressed vessel.
The Pakistan Navy provided essential support, including food supplies, medical assistance, and technical help to stabilize the ship. Medical staff conducted health screenings to ensure no sailors were suffering from dehydration or injury.
This incident follows a similar event last month when the Pakistan Navy evacuated 18 crew members from another merchant ship. Such actions demonstrate ongoing efforts in maritime safety and cross-border cooperation.
One official stated, “The intervention helped prevent the situation from escalating further in open waters.” Another remarked that this successful intervention serves as a reminder of how functional cooperation at sea can prevent potential maritime disasters.
Search and rescue operations in the northern Arabian Sea often require cross-border communication despite broader diplomatic tensions. As both nations face various challenges, these collaborative efforts highlight a commitment to maritime safety.
