David Payne Signs with Sunrisers Hyderabad for IPL 2026
In a significant development for the upcoming IPL 2026 season, David Payne has been signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as a replacement for Jack Edwards, who has been ruled out due to injury. The announcement was made on March 28, coinciding with the tournament’s opening match against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Payne, a left-arm pacer and Gloucestershire’s highest white-ball wicket-taker with 323 wickets, is set to join SRH for Rs 1.5 crore. His addition comes after Edwards was initially signed for Rs 3 crore but had to withdraw from the competition.
Having played one ODI for England, where he took one wicket for 38 runs against the Netherlands in June 2022, Payne has also made a name for himself in T20 cricket. He has taken 304 wickets in 233 matches at an impressive average of 21.16, showcasing his effectiveness in the format.
In the recently concluded Big Bash League, Payne delivered a standout performance, taking three wickets in the final and earning the player of the match title. His ability to perform under pressure has made him a valuable asset in various global T20 leagues, including the ILT20 and BBL.
Payne’s economy rate in T20 cricket stands at 8.03, and he has recorded five four-wicket hauls and one five-for in his career. His recent form and experience are expected to bolster SRH’s bowling attack as they prepare for the challenges of the IPL.
The IPL 2026 season is set to run from March 28 to May 31, with SRH opening the tournament against RCB. This match will mark the 28th encounter between the two teams, adding to the anticipation surrounding the event.
David Payne first burst onto the scene in 2010 with a notable performance in a 40-over game against Essex, and since then, he has continued to develop his skills and make a name for himself in the cricketing world.
As the tournament approaches, reactions from fans and analysts are expected to highlight Payne’s potential impact on SRH’s campaign. His signing has already generated interest, and many are eager to see how he will perform in the high-stakes environment of the IPL.
