Cricket IPL: Key Developments Ahead of 2026 Season

The numbers
The cricket IPL is gearing up for its 2026 season, with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) recently sold for a staggering $1.78 billion. This sale marks a significant shift in ownership, with the new consortium including the Aditya Birla Group, The Times of India Group, Bolt Ventures, and Blackstone. Aryaman Vikram Birla has been appointed as chair of RCB under this new ownership structure.
In addition to the ownership changes, the IPL has introduced several new regulations that will impact gameplay. The Impact Player rule, which was first introduced in 2023, will remain in effect until at least 2027. This rule allows teams to substitute a player during a match, adding a strategic layer to the game. Furthermore, a ball change is now permitted after the 10th over of the second innings, primarily due to dew conditions.
Another notable change is the restriction on practice sessions, with no formal training allowed on match days under the new protocols. This decision aims to streamline team preparations and ensure that players are in optimal condition for the matches.
Player performance remains a critical focus as the season approaches. Rishabh Pant, who played 14 matches in IPL 2025, scored 269 runs at an average of 24.45 and a strike rate of 133.17. His performance has drawn attention, particularly from RCB captain Faf du Plessis, who emphasized the need for Pant to refine his game strategy. “I want him to be more of a high-impact player,” du Plessis stated, adding that Pant’s stroke play needs to be more structured.
Du Plessis further commented on the importance of Pant’s initial overs, saying, “For me, it is about his first six balls.” This highlights the pressure on Pant to deliver early in the innings, a crucial factor for RCB’s success in the upcoming season.
Historically, RCB achieved its first IPL title in 2025, a milestone that has raised expectations for the team in the following season. The combination of new ownership and a focus on player development suggests a promising future for the franchise.
As the 2026 season approaches, observers are keen to see how these changes will affect team dynamics and overall performance. The cricketing community is watching closely, eager for the season to unfold and for RCB to build on its recent success.
