Nicola Carey is striving to secure a place in the Australia squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled for June. Having played a pivotal role in Australia’s triumphs at the 2020 T20 World Cup and the 2022 ODI World Cup, Carey is keen to contribute once again on the international stage.

Carey has participated in 25 ODIs and 31 T20Is for Australia, claiming 19 wickets in each format. Her recent return to the Australia XI at the SCG last month marked her first appearance in international cricket since December 2022, following a break from the game.

During the ongoing tour of the West Indies, Carey has embraced her reintegration into the Australian team. “I obviously haven’t been here for a while, but coming back in, there’s a lot of familiar faces, which is always nice,” Carey remarked, highlighting the supportive environment within the squad.

Australia recently secured a 3-0 victory in the T20I series against the West Indies, showcasing their strong performance ahead of the ODI series. The first ODI against the West Indies is scheduled for March 28, 2026, providing an opportunity for players to demonstrate their skills.

With Annabel Sutherland rested for the ODI series, Carey sees this as a chance to step up. “Belsy (Sutherland) is massive for this team, and when you take her out, that sort of leaves a couple of gaps, both batting and bowling,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of team dynamics.

Carey’s commitment to maximizing her playing opportunities led her to turn down a Cricket Australia contract in early 2023, focusing instead on domestic cricket. This decision reflects her dedication to honing her skills and maintaining peak performance.

As the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup approaches, Carey acknowledges the significance of the tournament. “It’s a massive tournament. Everyone here would want to be a part of that. That’s the carrot dangling at the end of this,” she stated, underscoring the competitive spirit within the team.

While Carey is eager to make her mark, details remain unconfirmed regarding the final squad selections for the World Cup. Observers will be watching closely to see how the upcoming ODI series impacts her chances of inclusion.
