Philadelphia Phillies Make History on Opening Day
By Vikram Nair / 27.03.2026
“It seems impossible, but closer Jhoan Duran did something no other Philadelphia Phillies pitcher has done in club history,” said a source following the game. Duran became the first Phillies pitcher to ever record a save at home on Opening Day, marking a significant achievement for the franchise.
On March 27, 2026, at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies faced off against their opponents with a strong start. They held a commanding 5-0 lead going into the ninth inning, showcasing their offensive prowess. However, the ninth inning brought some tension as Kyle Backhus gave up three earned runs, putting the game at risk.
With the tying run at the plate, Duran entered the game with a two-run lead. He managed to secure the save by getting Josh Smith to ground out to Bryce Harper, sealing the win for the Phillies. Duran’s save was historic, as it had never been accomplished by a Phillies pitcher before on Opening Day.
Adding to the excitement, Cristopher Sánchez delivered a stellar performance, striking out ten batters in six scoreless innings. Sánchez, who was the 2025 National League Cy Young runner-up, became the sixth pitcher in MLB history to achieve ten or more strikeouts without allowing a walk in six-plus scoreless innings on Opening Day.
Fans at Citizens Bank Park witnessed an impressive display of pitching and defense, with Sánchez allowing only three hits throughout his outing. The atmosphere was electric, with the Phillies having ranked fourth in MLB attendance last season, averaging over 41,000 fans per game.
As the season progresses, the Phillies will look to build on this strong start, with both Duran and Sánchez playing pivotal roles in their success. The introduction of the save statistic in 1969 has made such achievements even more noteworthy in the world of baseball.
With the 2026 season now underway, the Phillies aim to capitalize on their Opening Day momentum and continue to engage their passionate fan base. The next expected developments will be closely watched as the team seeks to maintain their competitive edge in the league.
