zojila pass — IN news

The Zojila Pass, known for its treacherous conditions, has long posed significant risks to travelers. Historically, the pass would remain closed for nearly five months during winter, isolating Ladakh from the rest of India. However, recent developments have brought this issue to the forefront.

On Friday, an avalanche struck at approximately 3 pm, burying several vehicles traveling from Srinagar to Kargil. This tragic incident resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals, with five others sustaining injuries. Rescue teams quickly mobilized, utilizing JCBs to clear the snow and rescue trapped passengers.

As of now, seven bodies have been retrieved, but two individuals remain unaccounted for. The avalanche occurred near Zero Point, situated at an elevation of 3,528 meters (11,649 feet), where three to four vehicles were trapped, effectively blocking the Srinagar-Kargil highway.

The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh expressed deep concern over the tragedy, emphasizing the need for improved safety measures in the region. Authorities have urged travelers to avoid the route until conditions stabilize, highlighting the ongoing risks associated with winter travel in this area.

The Zojila Tunnel, currently under construction, aims to provide year-round connectivity between Srinagar, Drass, Kargil, and Leh. Once completed, it is expected to dramatically transform travel conditions by offering a safe, weather-proof corridor. Currently, travel across the pass can take three to four hours, while the tunnel is projected to reduce this time to just 15 to 20 minutes.

Experts note that the Zojila Pass is notorious for its steep gradients, narrow corridors, and sudden weather shifts, making it one of the most dangerous stretches in the Himalayas. Authorities emphasized that rescue and clearance operations are still underway, as they work to address the aftermath of this devastating event.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact number of vehicles trapped under the avalanche, but the incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols in the region.
