On March 29, 2026, Ajinkya Rahane captained the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The match marked a significant moment for both teams, as MI had not won their opening match of an IPL season since 2012.

KKR set a competitive total of 220 runs for 4 wickets in their innings, with Rahane contributing a solid 67 runs off 40 balls. However, despite their strong batting performance, KKR lost the match by six wickets.

During the match, Rahane experienced cramps and had to leave the field, leading to vice-captain Rinku Singh taking over as on-field skipper. Rahane later stated that he was feeling okay after the cramps, which affected both of his calves.

MI successfully chased down the target of 221 runs, with a notable opening partnership of 148 runs between Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton. This victory was a significant boost for MI, who were eager to start the season on a positive note.

Rahane expressed the need for KKR to find balance with their bowling attack, acknowledging that their inexperienced bowlers would learn from the match. He commented, “I thought MI batted well. So our bowlers will definitely learn.”

In a light-hearted moment, Rahane made a sarcastic remark regarding Cameron Green, the costliest overseas player in IPL history, who did not bowl during the match. He suggested that inquiries about Green’s bowling situation should be directed to Cricket Australia.

As KKR reflects on their opener, the team will need to regroup and address their bowling strategy ahead of their next matches. The loss serves as a reminder of the challenges they face in the highly competitive IPL environment.

Overall, the match highlighted both the potential and the areas for improvement for KKR under Rahane’s leadership as they aim to bounce back in the tournament.
