Rinku Singh Takes Charge as Captain Amidst Injury Concerns
By Ananya Rao / 30.03.2026
On March 29, 2026, at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, a significant turn of events unfolded during the match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians. Just before the match reached its critical juncture, Ajinkya Rahane, the KKR captain, left the field due to an injury that was initially thought to be cramps caused by the high humidity.
As Rahane departed, Rinku Singh, who had recently been appointed as the vice-captain of KKR, took over the captaincy. This marked a notable moment in Singh’s career, as he had never led a T20 side before this match.
Earlier in the week, KKR’s CEO had confirmed Rinku Singh’s new role as vice-captain, highlighting the team’s confidence in his leadership abilities. Singh, who has been part of KKR since his debut IPL season in 2018, has evolved into a vital cog in the lineup as a middle-order batter and finisher.
During the match, Rahane managed to score 67 runs off 40 balls, contributing significantly to KKR’s total of 220 runs for 4 wickets. Rinku Singh also made a valuable contribution, scoring 33 runs off 21 balls, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.
KKR’s head coach, Abhishek Nayar, praised Rinku Singh’s evolution as a leader, stating, “I think it’s quite befitting because my first memory of coming to KKR and being part of the support staff was working with Rinku Singh.” This sentiment reflects the trust and respect Singh has garnered within the team.
However, the match was not without its challenges. Rinku Singh was visibly frustrated with the fielding efforts of his teammates, particularly after a dropped catch by Ryan Rickelton in the 8th over, indicating the high expectations he has as a leader.
As KKR navigates this season, the implications of Rahane’s injury and Singh’s leadership will be closely monitored. KKR failed to defend their title in the previous season under Rahane’s captaincy, and the team is eager to turn their fortunes around.
Currently, Rinku Singh’s leadership is being put to the test, and his performance in this role could define his future with the team. The evolving dynamics within KKR will be crucial as they aim for success in the ongoing IPL season.
With Singh at the helm, KKR fans will be watching closely to see how he adapts to his new responsibilities and whether he can lead the team to victory in the face of adversity.
