The numbers
The MIC Cup 2026 is poised to be a significant event in youth football, featuring 52 teams from various countries, including Minerva FC, which is representing India. The tournament will kick off on April 1, 2026, with Minerva FC’s first match against Boca OC scheduled for 9:30 PM IST.
Minerva FC, based in Mohali, Punjab, is the only Indian team participating in this year’s edition of the tournament, which has garnered a reputation as the “Junior World Cup” due to its competitive nature and the caliber of teams involved. The tournament will see Minerva FC competing in Group B alongside Boca OC, Kaptiva Sports Academy, and EF Santa Ana.
Over the years, the MIC Cup has become a platform for young talents, having featured football legends like Lionel Messi and Neymar in its past editions. The tournament is known for its structured approach to youth development, making it a crucial event for aspiring footballers.
Minerva FC’s journey to the MIC Cup has not been without challenges. Ranjit Bajaj, the club’s owner, shared, “The entire process was very difficult. Initially, visas got rejected, and we thought our dreams would be shattered.” Despite these hurdles, the team successfully arrived in Spain on March 25, 2026, ready to compete.
In preparation for the tournament, Minerva FC raised approximately 45 lakhs through crowdfunding and took personal loans totaling 2 crores to support their participation. Bajaj expressed the importance of such tournaments, stating, “If our players have to reach that level, they need to compete in these tournaments.” The team hopes to raise an additional 15 lakhs to further support their endeavors.
The matches will be live-streamed on the Minerva Academy YouTube channel, allowing fans and supporters to follow the team’s progress in real-time. As the tournament unfolds, it is expected to draw significant attention from football enthusiasts worldwide.
As the MIC Cup 2026 approaches, observers are keen to see how Minerva FC performs against its international counterparts. The team’s participation is seen as a vital step in promoting Indian football on a global stage, and the excitement surrounding the tournament continues to build.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the overall impact of the tournament on the players’ development and the potential for future opportunities. However, the enthusiasm within the team is palpable, with Bajaj noting, “When you see their smiles, you realize what hard work can do.”
