Brunei: Albanese’s Visit to Secure Energy Supplies
“Engaging with critical regional partners such as Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia will help ensure Australia’s energy supply remains secure during times of uncertainty,” stated Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese ahead of his upcoming visit to Brunei and Malaysia from April 14 to 17, 2026.
During this visit, Albanese is scheduled to meet with Brunei’s ruler, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The discussions will primarily focus on securing fuel and fertiliser supplies, which have become increasingly vital due to ongoing disruptions caused by the conflict in the Middle East.
Australia relies heavily on imports for its energy needs, with approximately 80% of its fuel sourced from abroad. Notably, Brunei plays a significant role in this equation, supplying 9% of Australia’s diesel imports and 11% of its fertiliser-grade urea imports. Meanwhile, Malaysia is Australia’s third-largest source of refined fuel, contributing 10% of its fertiliser-grade urea imports.
Albanese’s visit comes in the wake of localised shortages and soaring prices in Australia, particularly following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route for oil. The Prime Minister, along with Foreign Minister Penny Wong, is actively engaging with regional partners to ensure the security of energy supplies.
In addition to securing fuel supplies, Australia also plays a crucial role in the energy landscape of the region, supplying 95% of Malaysia’s imported natural gas. This interdependence highlights the importance of diplomatic relations between these nations.
As the geopolitical landscape continues to shift, the outcomes of Albanese’s discussions in Brunei and Malaysia will be closely monitored. The Australian government aims to fortify its energy security and maintain stable supply chains in the face of global uncertainties.
