Noida News: Factory Workers Protest Over Low Wages Turns Violent
The protests in Noida intensified after Haryana raised its monthly minimum wages from ₹14,000 to ₹19,000, highlighting the disparity with Uttar Pradesh’s minimum wage of ₹13,000. Factory workers in Phase 2 of Noida took to the streets, demanding better pay and working conditions.
As tensions escalated, the protest turned violent, resulting in several vehicles being vandalised, with at least one set on fire. Incidents of stone pelting were reported, causing damage to property in the area.
In response to the unrest, heavy police forces were deployed to restore order and ensure the safety of both the workers and the surrounding community. District Magistrate Medha Rupam urged all workers to continue their duties peacefully and avoid believing in rumours or misleading information.
To address the grievances of the workers, the district administration announced a series of measures. Factories have been instructed to ensure a weekly day off for every worker and to pay double for any overtime worked. Furthermore, workers will receive their annual bonus before November 30.
A control room has been established to provide immediate assistance to workers, available 24×7. The administration has also directed all factories to strictly follow labour welfare guidelines, including the formation of Internal Complaints Committees in all workplaces to prevent sexual harassment.
The situation remains tense, and officials are closely monitoring the developments. Observers are hopeful that the measures announced will help alleviate the concerns of the workers and restore calm in the region.
