AFC Champions League Update: Al-Ahli Advances, Al-Hilal Eliminated
By Rohan Mehta / 14.04.2026
Before the recent matches, expectations were high for Al-Hilal, who had topped the league phase with an unbeaten record of 22 points. Their strong performance had positioned them as favorites heading into the knockout stage of the AFC Champions League.
However, a decisive moment came during their quarterfinal match against Al-Sadd. Despite leading the game at various points, Al-Hilal found themselves in a tense situation that culminated in a dramatic penalty shoot-out after a 3-3 draw. The match saw Al-Hilal’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic score first in the 29th minute, followed by goals from Salem Al-Dawsari and Johan Mojica.
Al-Sadd, however, responded resiliently, with Claudinho equalizing shortly after Milinkovic-Savic’s opener and Roberto Firmino scoring the final equalizer to force penalties. Ultimately, Al-Sadd eliminated Al-Hilal on penalties, marking a significant upset in the tournament.
In contrast, Al-Ahli secured their place in the quarterfinals with a late 1-0 victory over Al-Duhail, thanks to a stunning free kick from Riyad Mahrez in the 117th minute. This victory not only advanced Al-Ahli but also highlighted their determination and ability to perform under pressure.
Al-Ahli will now face Johor Darul Ta’zim in the quarterfinals, while Al-Sadd is set to meet Vissel Kobe. The outcomes of these matches will be crucial as teams vie for the prestigious title.
This year’s tournament is hosted in Saudi Arabia for the second consecutive year in a centralized format, which has influenced the dynamics of the competition. The shift to single-leg ties has added an extra layer of intensity and unpredictability to the matches.
As the tournament progresses, the elimination of a strong team like Al-Hilal raises questions about the competitive landscape of the AFC Champions League. Expert analysts suggest that the knockout format can lead to unexpected results, as seen in this instance.
With the quarterfinals approaching, teams will need to adapt quickly to the pressures of single-elimination play. The stakes are higher than ever, and each match could determine the future of the clubs involved.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any potential changes to the tournament format or scheduling, but the excitement surrounding the AFC Champions League continues to build as teams prepare for their next challenges.
