Darjeeling: ASPHL Launches New Hotel in Hill Destination
On March 31, 2026, ASPHL, part of the Apeejay Surrendra Group, announced the launch of three new hotels in India’s leisure destinations, including Zone by The Park Darjeeling. This marks a significant milestone for the company as it ventures into the hill destination market, aiming to attract both domestic and international tourists.
Zone by The Park Darjeeling is one of the three hotels launched, alongside Zone Connect by The Park Gangtok and Zone Connect by The Park Katra. The introduction of these hotels is seen as a strategic move to enhance the hospitality landscape in popular tourist areas, with Vikas Ahluwalia, a representative from ASPHL, stating, “The simultaneous launch of these three hotels underscores our commitment to growth and the diversification of our portfolio.” This expansion is expected to boost local economies and create job opportunities in the region.
Darjeeling, along with Kurseong and Kalimpong, has a combined population of approximately 0.875 million, according to the 2011 census. This demographic factor plays a crucial role in the potential success of the new hotel, as it caters to both local residents and the influx of tourists. The region has long been a favored destination for travelers seeking its scenic beauty and cultural heritage.
In the political landscape, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has earmarked three seats in the upcoming elections for its ally, the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM). The BGPM, led by Anit Thapa, is positioning itself as a key player in the region, especially as the BJP has won the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat four times in a row since 2009. This political backdrop adds another layer of significance to the hotel launch, as local governance and development are often intertwined with tourism initiatives.
The incumbent MLA, Ruden Sada Lepcha, is defending his Kalimpong seat as a BGPM candidate, emphasizing development as a central theme in his campaign. He stated, “People of Kalimpong will vote for development as they are tired of the promises BJP has been making since 2009.” This sentiment reflects a growing desire among constituents for tangible progress and accountability from their elected representatives.
On the other hand, the BJP continues to assert its influence in the region, with local leaders like Sonam Lama highlighting issues such as corruption in the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA). Lama remarked, “Corruption in the GTA administration is a key issue. People know that only BJP can ensure good governance.” This ongoing political discourse is likely to impact the perception of new developments, including the hotel launch.
As the political landscape evolves, the significance of the hotel launch in Darjeeling becomes increasingly apparent. It not only represents a business opportunity for ASPHL but also serves as a potential catalyst for local development and tourism growth. The interplay between hospitality investments and political dynamics will be closely watched by stakeholders in the region.
Currently, the region stands at a crossroads, with the new hotel expected to enhance tourism while the political climate remains charged with competition and promises of development. The outcome of the upcoming elections will likely influence the future trajectory of both local governance and tourism in Darjeeling.
