India Weather Western Disturbances Bring Relief from Heatwave

A series of back-to-back Western Disturbances is expected to provide much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave in North India. Multiple disturbances are set to influence the region, potentially lowering temperatures and triggering dust storms and rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that isolated dust storms and light rainfall could begin as early as the evening of April 27. Widespread dust storms and thunderstorms are likely between April 28 and April 30 across Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan.

Temperatures could dip below the 42°C mark starting April 29, providing some respite for residents. Wind speeds are expected to reach 30–40 kmph on April 28, increasing to 40–50 kmph on April 29.

The IMD has warned of possible localized disruptions due to strong winds and thunderstorms. The current sequence of disturbances is relatively rare during this period of intense heat. Observers note that such back-to-back Western Disturbances during a heatwave phase are uncommon.

The approaching disturbances are seen as the “only ray of hope” in easing the ongoing heatwave. Thunderstorm activity is anticipated to continue until at least May 2, bringing further precipitation.

Dust storms are expected to precede or accompany rainfall activity, which will increase across the region. However, parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh may initially experience dry weather.

The arrival of rain-bearing systems could bring a sense of relief to millions battling extreme temperatures. The IMD continues to monitor these developments closely.
