180 million year old ichthyosaur discovered in Germany
The discovery of a 180-million-year-old ichthyosaur fossil in Mistelgau, Germany, challenges previous assumptions about its survival and feeding adaptations. The fossil belongs to the genus Temnodontosaurus and measures an estimated 21 feet in length.
This specimen includes a nearly complete skull, lower jaw, shoulder girdle, spine, and more than 100 teeth. However, it also shows signs of severe jaw injuries that likely affected its ability to catch prey.
Key findings:
- The fossil provides insights into the ecological dynamics of Jurassic seas.
- Gastroliths, or stomach stones, found in the abdominal cavity suggest a shift in feeding behavior.
- The ichthyosaur resembles modern-day dolphins but is not related to them.
Ulrike Albert, a researcher involved in the discovery, stated, “Our Temnodontosaurus fossil is one of the youngest finds of this ichthyosaur genus to date.” This finding adds depth to our understanding of prehistoric survival within ancient marine ecosystems.
Stefan Eggmaier noted that despite its injuries, the ichthyosaur survived, as evidenced by its heavily worn teeth and gastroliths. This challenges prior beliefs about how such creatures adapted to their environment during the Jurassic period.
The Mistelgau site has been a rich source of marine fossils since excavations began in 1998. Observers anticipate that further research will reveal more about these ancient marine reptiles and their evolutionary history.
