Harry Kane passes Pelé WC goals total as England advance - ESPN India

Kane’s decisive performance

England secured their progression to the World Cup last 16, largely due to Harry Kane‘s two goals against DR Congo. The captain scored in the 75th and 86th minutes, helping England come from behind to win the match. This performance saw Kane reach 13 World Cup goals, surpassing Pelé in the all-time charts. His two strikes in this match brought his tournament total to five goals.

Despite being less involved than usual for much of the game, Kane delivered crucial moments. In the first 35 minutes, he had limited touches, with his first shot coming after 34 minutes. However, he ultimately provided the match-winning double. Thomas Tuchel, England’s manager, commented on Kane’s ability to decide difficult matches, highlighting his top-level performance.

Kane’s impact was particularly notable given England’s struggles in the match. The team conceded the opening goal, marking the sixth consecutive knockout match in a major tournament where they fell behind first. Other players, including Anthony Gordon, who provided two assists, and Jude Bellingham, who maintained attacking momentum, also contributed to England’s comeback.

Tactical adjustments and team challenges

The match against DR Congo was a challenging one for England, with the opposition displaying a fearless approach from the start. DR Congo took an early lead, with Brian Cipenga scoring after seven minutes. The first half saw England struggling, with instances of frustration among players, including Bellingham receiving a booking and arguments occurring on the bench. Reece James was observed speaking with Bellingham during a hydration break to calm the situation.

Tuchel made several tactical changes during the game to shift the narrative. He replaced wingers Noni Madueke and Marcus Rashford with Bukayo Saka and Gordon. Later, Djed Spence was substituted, and Declan Rice moved to right-back, while Eberechi Eze was introduced to add unpredictability. These adjustments proved effective, with the equaliser arriving five minutes after Tuchel’s final changes. Eze and Rice combined, with Rice crossing for Gordon, who then set up Kane for a header past goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi.

Gordon’s second assist came in the 86th minute, leading to Kane’s winning goal. Despite the victory, concerns remain about England’s overall performance, as they have not produced a complete display in their initial four games. The team has appeared tired, fractious, and unbalanced at times, with the defence showing vulnerabilities. The next challenge for England will be against Mexico at the Azteca.

Looking ahead to Mexico City

Kane’s form is a significant factor for England’s prospects in the tournament. He is considered a contender for the Ballon D’Or, alongside players like Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, and Vinicius Jr. Despite being a player of a certain age, Kane feels refreshed and capable of performing at a high level. His ability to deliver in crucial moments, even with limited involvement, has drawn comparisons to Haaland.

Former player Gary Neville has stated that Kane is the best striker England has ever had, placing him above figures like Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker, and Jimmy Greaves. Tuchel expressed belief in his team’s ability to overcome challenges, particularly with Kane’s presence. The upcoming match against Mexico in the altitude of the Azteca is expected to be another test for England, where they will likely rely on Kane once more.

The team’s defensive issues, including injuries to players like Tino Livramento, Jarell Quansah, and James, further highlight the importance of Kane’s contributions. England will need to improve their overall performance if they are to advance further in the tournament, with their next fixture scheduled for Sunday.
