England Women have advanced to the final of the Women’s T20 World Cup after a comprehensive victory against South Africa Women in the semi-final. The match, held at The Kia Oval in Kennington, saw England deliver a strong performance across batting, bowling, and fielding.
South Africa Women won the toss and elected to field first. Despite some early pressure, England managed to set a challenging total. The innings of Nat Sciver-Brunt was particularly notable, as she returned to play after missing three games due to injury and scored a match-winning innings. Her captain, Heather Knight, expressed admiration for Sciver-Brunt’s performance under pressure, highlighting their partnership as one of their best.
England’s total of 169 for 5 was achieved despite a double strike from Nonkululeko Mlaba, which prevented them from reaching a higher score. The closing overs saw contributions from Dani Gibson and Freya Kemp, with Gibson backing away from a delivery and a top edge from the penultimate ball. The final delivery of England’s innings resulted in four byes.
South Africa’s Chase and England’s Bowling
In response, South Africa faced a daunting chase. England’s bowlers maintained consistent pressure, making it difficult for the South African batters to accelerate the scoring rate. Lauren Bell and Sophie Ecclestone were among the key bowlers for England, with Ecclestone described as being “in the zone” during her first over.
South Africa’s innings saw some moments of aggression, such as Laura Wolvaardt’s lofted four over mid-off. However, Wolvaardt was later caught by Ecclestone off the bowling of Linsey Smith, a significant wicket that further shifted momentum towards England. Ecclestone’s catch was described as a “wonderwoman style” leap, showcasing the team’s energetic fielding.

Tazmin Brits and Suné Luus attempted to build a partnership, but the required run rate continued to climb. Luus was eventually caught by Ecclestone off Bell’s bowling, after being discomforted by a short ball. Chloe Tryon also managed to hit two fours off Charlie Dean, but these isolated efforts were not enough to turn the tide.
England’s fielding was highlighted as one of their best performances, with players like Linsey Smith contributing to saving runs and putting pressure on the South African batters. Even when South Africa managed to find the boundary, England’s fielders were active, such as Nat Sciver-Brunt diving at mid-off.
Victory and Final Preparations
The match concluded with England securing a 40-run victory. The final over, bowled by Linsey Smith, saw Nadine de Klerk attempt to score, but she was unable to find a morale-boosting boundary. This comprehensive win means England will now face Australia in the final.

The atmosphere at The Kia Oval was electric, with a record attendance for a women’s match at the venue. The crowd witnessed a thrilling encounter that saw England overcome early challenges and demonstrate their strength as a team. The team’s performance was lauded for its calm heads, sensible batting, great bowling, and excellent fielding.
Heather Knight shared insights on maintaining composure under pressure, advising young players to stick to their routines and trust their game. The team’s ability to switch on during game time despite pre-match emotions was also noted. England’s starting lineup included Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Amy Jones (Wicket Keeper), Nat Sciver-Brunt (Captain), Alice Capsey, Heather Knight, Freya Kemp, Dani Gibson, Charlie Dean, Sophie Ecclestone, Linsey Smith, and Lauren Bell. The match started at 18:30.
