Cutting off Erling Haaland is key but Norway are not just a one-man team | Emma Hayes

Tactical approaches for England and Norway

The upcoming World Cup quarter-final match between England and Norway in Miami is anticipated to be a challenging encounter, potentially extending to 120 minutes. Norway, led by coach Ståle Solbakken for six and a half years, is considered a dangerous opponent, particularly due to the presence of Erling Haaland.

A key tactical focus for England will be to limit Haaland’s opportunities. He is known for his clinical finishing and ability to score with minimal chances. His movement inside the box, especially his explosive first yard, makes him difficult for defenders to mark. He can also score from early crosses and thrives on one-touch finishes or powerful shots.

Norway’s patient build-up play, as demonstrated in their victory over Brazil, involves controlling the game and effectively using their wingers. To counter this, England needs to minimise conceded corners and prevent slip passes that bring Haaland into play around the box. Midfielders and full-backs will need to maintain pressure on the ball to prevent crosses and shut off creative spaces.

Despite Haaland’s prominence, Norway is not solely a one-man team. Players like Antonio Nusa on the left wing have been productive, and Oscar Bobb has made impactful cameo appearances. Martin Ødegaard, an Arsenal player, also plays a crucial role in linking play from midfield. Norway’s ability to build from the back with a fluid, progressive midfield creates overloads that can challenge opponents.

Key players and conditions

The match will feature a direct contest between Haaland and England’s Harry Kane, both leading contenders for the Golden Boot. Haaland has scored seven goals in Norway’s run to the quarter-finals, while Kane has six goals in five games for England. However, Solbakken emphasised that the match is between the two nations, not just the individual strikers.

The hot and humid conditions in Miami are expected to be a significant factor, potentially influencing the tempo of the game. Norway has played four of their five matches in hot and humid conditions, while England’s previous games have been in varied environments, including air-conditioned venues and cooler weather.

England’s manager, Thomas Tuchel, has been praised for his team’s performance, particularly their ability to cope with setbacks, as seen in their 3-2 victory over Mexico despite playing with 10 men. Jude Bellingham and Kane have been highlighted as outstanding players for England, with Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka also showing strong performances.

Norway’s captain, Martin Ødegaard, demonstrated his quality against Brazil with a high pass completion rate and significant ball carrying. He will likely face Declan Rice in midfield, a former teammate at Arsenal. Solbakken believes England faces more pressure as favourites to reach the semi-finals.

Defensive strategies and historical context

One potential strategy for England to contain Haaland involves the inclusion of defender Dan Burn. Burn, a Newcastle centre-back, has a track record of limiting Haaland’s scoring opportunities in previous club encounters. In over 10 hours of play against Burn since 2022, Haaland has scored only once.

Similarly, Haaland has scored only once in 406 minutes against Ezri Konsa across five matches. These statistics are encouraging for Tuchel, given Haaland’s prolific scoring record of 112 goals in 132 Premier League appearances over four seasons.

This World Cup marks Norway’s first appearance since 1998, and their progression to the quarter-finals is their furthest in the tournament’s history. Their journey has included victories over Iraq, Senegal, Ivory Coast, and Brazil.

The winner of this quarter-final will advance to face either Argentina or Switzerland in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
